The article states that the accused, Branden Staples, faces up to ten years in jail. A life sentence seems extreme given that no one was killed.

From the way the article was written, it doesn't sound as if Mr. Staples was capitalizing on the Orlando shooting. Perhaps his attack was coincidentally on the same day, that is, he wasn't motivated by the Pulse nightclub massacre. Maybe the two events just happened to be on the same day. After all, there must have been other violent crimes, including those using guns, at different locations around the US on the same day.

Regardless, the kid is a repeat offender and troublemaker who clearly needs to be separated from society. Hopefully, the prosecutors will be successful and get a conviction.
