1. Didn't defeat his primary opponents on ideas (make believe they had ideas) - but with a scorched earth policy - so personal and so degrading they can't even look him in the eye without puking.

2. Even if he had managed somehow to repair these relationships, it probably wouldn't be enough because voters saw how he treated people.

But, he might be closer than he is today, if he had thrown away his schtick.
