(3,839 posts)six justices. . .and it would make the court 7-2 in our direction.

(95,337 posts)Kennedy is unpredictable. Sometimes he's on our team and sometimes he's just as bad as Alito and Thomas.

(95,337 posts)Bush was very wise with that selection - picking Roberts, who was 50 years old when he was nominated, to be Head Justice even though this guy never served a day on the Supreme Court. Roberts could very well last through TWO more Democratic, 2-term presidents and then he'd only be about 77-78, which still makes him younger than Ruth Bader Ginsberg is today.
This is why I have no problem voting for Hillary. Was she the best candidate? Oh hell no! But she's not the only election in the fall and we cannot afford to turn that Supreme Court over to the GOP. If the GOP ever gets a solid 5-4 control of the bench we are truly fucked. Then again I don't think these right-wing lobbying groups want a GOP control either. All these laws they hate- like abortion, healthcare, gun control - they are HUGE money generators for the Lobbying groups which means HUGE paychecks for the Lobbyists.

(10,597 posts)... some Supreme Court Judges. The problem is evidenced in the decisions they make. How they seem to think clearly on this issue this time, but can't think straight on this or other issues at other times. No consistency. Judgement slipping.
Thank God they did the right thing this time, as this has and would in the future affect so many lives of women and their families all across this nation.

(95,337 posts)And I think the sitting president should have the right to choose whom the Head Justice is. Ok I might be pushing it for that second idea but the first one is much needed (along with term limits for Congress too!)

(10,597 posts)for SC and Congress. I didn't know that the Pres didn't appoint the Chief Justice. The SC does that too, per the Constitution?

(7,290 posts)when the vacancy occurs. I think the previous poster is suggesting that when the Presidency changes, the new President should be able to change the Chief Justice as well.

(95,337 posts)Are they too conservative on some issues? Oh yes. But Catholics still are nowhere near as bad as the crazy fundamentalist in this country.
Example - the Catholics want to have their kids educated and I know there are Catholic schools out there that have some of the best schools in the country. Sure they want to teach their faith but they want to make sure their kids excel in life too and that requires a strong education. Here in Delaware, we have Top educational Catholic schools like Padua, St Marks and Ursuline Academy (Notable alumni include WBNA superstar Elena Delle Donne and actress Aubrey Plaza). But the fundies - well in Texas their courts held up a ruling that would allow parents to NOT teach their kids because of religious beliefs that everyone will be raptured soon anyways.
And Senator Bob Casey Jr is Catholic. He's still pro-life but not hideously pro-life. But he tends to be very progressive on many other issues out there including Labor, Civil Rights and healthcare.
Catholics are not the problem, the fundies are!

(38,414 posts)As you pointed out, many Catholics are not ...."hideously pro-life" That is that is there personal belief, but they do not push that belief on others. ...That point is extremely important....thank you..

(16,399 posts)I'm anti-religion, but the evangelicals are far worse on all of those issues and have overwhelmed the legislatures that are making these fucked up laws. I don't even know that the RCC inserts themselves into voting and labor rights....and are strictly anti-death penalty.
I guess I should remind you Justice Sotomayor is a Catholic.

(24,461 posts)That church is still laden with dominionist anti-choice fundies who, with the Evangelicals, single-issue (and, in the case of Rove's 2004 "geigh marryin" wedge, double-issue) voted in the Failure Fuhrer each time. That element cannot be trusted for human rights issues should this be a 7-2 Conservative tilt. I was seriously surprised at Kennedy's decision on Obergefell v. Hodges.
Make no mistake - the RCC is far, FAR from a progressive institution. Empowering them with four more Roberts and Alitos is bad news and thinking they're not interested in more power in Washington is folly.

(16,399 posts)But a judges' voting record is far more important than their religion. CONSERVATIVE vs LIBERAL is the litmus test here. Your own title to the post is the lead here.
I wouldn't be comfortable with an ATHEIST CONSERVATIVE over a ROMAN CATHOLIC LIBERAL
It sounds like you would have rejected Sonya Sotomayor out of hand just based on her religion. Would you?

(5,762 posts)I don't give a shit what you think of Hillary Clinton as a person.
Our daughters' future depends on her being elected.
We have an eminently qualified Supreme Court nominee that the do-nothing Senate refuses to grant a hearing.
I demand better.
