Yesterday, the person who shot my cousin and his son in a road rage incident was sentenced. The two longest sentence -- which run consecutively -- are 25-to-life for murdering the younger man, and 15 to life for the attempted murder of the father .The judge noted that this person poses a danger to society, where ever he is. Thus, the ex- New York City cop/ part-time corrections officer at the county jail, will never get out of jail.
I was pleased that the DA was able to submit information on one of the other similar incidents where, a couple months before shooting my family members, this thug had dogged a person driving on Route 17 (between NYC and Binghamton), and rushed towards the other vehicle with a gun.
More, in sentencing, the judge noted that the thug not only had shown zero remorse for killing a 26-year old, but was flippant while lying on the witness stand.
Today would be Derek Dylans 28th birthday.
Thank you to everyone here who has been supportive during this.
Peace,
H2O Man

H2O Man, I am glad to hear that justice -- the kind that is possible within our rule of law -- was delivered in this case.
It is beyond my understanding to know what kind of spiritual justice or karma may be meted out.
Peace and Solidarity.

Finally, justice.
Peace and love to you and your family, and to the family of Derek Dylan. I hope this just verdict will help their feelings of loss.

(17,874 posts)May well not ever be outside again. I doubt he'll be able to control himself sufficiently to warrant parole, anyway.
It would be much better to have Derek Dylan back, though.

(12,665 posts)That it doesn't make the hurt and pain go away. However, it helps to bring it to an end, especially when justice was served and the family was able to be there and hear it. Now, the good memories can start to take over.
I'm so glad for you and your family that this dirtbag will never be free again.
Take care, H2O Man, and thank you for sharing this tragedy with us.

(9,314 posts)You did all that you could to get justice for Derek, and I believe he knows that. You also managed to remove a threat from society.
I hope you can find some comfort in the coming days in remembering the good times you shared with your cousin. Also remember to each day look around and see what you still have that is good in your life. That to me is what makes life worth living.
Best regards to you and your family. Take care.

(76,100 posts)in county jail. As he wasn't even 24 hours from his last shift of work as a guard, he likely wasn't popular with the other inmates. (I worked at the jail to do mental health evaluations, plus a couple of groups, during my employment at the clinic. I recognize that he could have been assaulted. Even county jail can be a violent place.)
I assume he'll be heading to Elmira, and evaluated on the location to be transferred in a couple of months. Yesterday, I heard Attica mentioned. That place remains a nightmare.

(12,618 posts)Life in prison for an ex-cop. Have fun asshole.
I'm glad your family has some closure, but I can only imagine that few things would truly bring you peace. Senseless, stupid, and barbaric acts like this simply should not happen, and I can only imagine how I would feel if that was somebody I loved. It's no use trying to make sense of it because at the end of the day, it simply doesn't make any sense.
Here's to hoping you one day find peace and healing.

(76,100 posts)Retired NYC officer; re-located upstate; fired from position at Hartwick College for bullying; hired as a part-time guard at county jail.
We documented three times that he threatened people with guns in the six months before he killed my cousin's son. Allowed to plea on the one case mentioned in the OP's link.
There was a fuck of a lot of evidence that didn't make it into trial. But enough did, that the judge recognized him as a sociopath. And accurately so.

It's LONG past time for rogue cops to answer for their crimes. My younger stepson is a detective, and I know there are far, FAR too many out their just like this sonofabitch.

(1,233 posts)Now the real work begins for you and your family.
When a loved one is taken from us through crime, we are forced to set the grief aside somewhat, and focus on getting justice. Once the trial is over, however, there is still a grieving process to get through.
It is even harder to get through that process when it is delayed- the rest of the world has moved on, and there is an expectation that the passing of time has made things less painful for the family.
It is time now to focus on the loss of Derek, and not on the monster that took him. I hope your family's love for him, and for one another, will sustain you through this. Don't hesitate to reach out to others for help. There are many here who care.

(11,125 posts)I surmise, with an attitude like that, that the perp will never get out alive. You just can't go into the hard core prison with an attitude like that. There will be more on him in the future, cause I think he probably intends to take on the entire staff plus inmates. If I was the warden, I wouldn't want him in my facility.
Best to you and your family. Glad he won't be on the roads wreaking havoc anymore.

(10,239 posts)I am heartened a little to see that the perpetrator was sentenced to the fullest extent of the law. He deserves every day he spends inside those walls and being an ex-cop on the inside is not going to be easy time no matter where it is.
Nothing can make your family whole again, but may this justice make the pain and loss more distant and lessen the burden for you all.

(8,175 posts)This was a needed resolution to this open wound in this family.
And this was a needed resolution to get this fucking predator off the streets.
I know this will not fix your wounds, H2O, but it will be a start...and it was a necessary decision for you and your family to finally find some kind of closure. I know there is never any real and complete closure. We all have to deal with memories that repeat through our history, but some degree of resolution can be found in the law.
Again, I"m so sorry this happened to your family.
