A 3-day-old baby girl was killed by family dogs in Fresno early Monday, police say.
The girls mother thought the dogs were chained up in the back yard when the attack occurred, police said. The baby was attacked at a home on the 3700 block of North Glenn Avenue about 12:30 a.m. Monday and died a short time later at Community Regional Medical Center, Sgt. Dan Macias said.
The 33-year old mother, who was not identified, said she left the child on the couch and walked away for a few seconds, Macias said. She left the door open because it was hot and she thought the dogs were tied up, he said.
The two male dogs, which are believed to be shar-pei/pit bull mixes, are owned by the womans brother, who wasnt identified. He surrendered the dogs to the Central California Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. One of the two dogs is aggressive, the woman told police. Macias said police are continuing to investigate and charges havent been ruled out.
The child, the woman and her 30-year old brother were the only ones in the house, Macias said. At this point, we believe it was an unfortunate accident, Macias said. Walter Salvari, SPCA spokesman, said the dogs will be euthanized.

(14,031 posts)I am always afraid to engage in rational discussion regarding traits that particular breeds have been bred to have. And there are certain people who want dogs bred for certain traits in order to make them look TOUGH in their minds.

(5,946 posts)I am not sure they recognize them as human. there was that woman who spent 3 days in the hospital giving birth and then left her baby with her dog after no food or water for days to go out and buy dog food. Well you know. or the man that was punishing his dog (lab) by not feeding it, and was babysitting a baby. babies are fragile, you are supposed to take care of them. having something smaller than a cat making noise in front of a hungry dog, I don't know.
pssst - I use a plastic covered metal lead (40 ft long) to keep my dog in my unfenced back yard while I am gardening or barbecuing. she doesn't seem to mind the lead but prefers to be inside most of the time to lie on one of the couches or dog beds she has everywhere.
ETA - if you have a vicious dog and don't train it. you should not have a dog. Period. avoid tragedies before they happen. I was told the dog I adopted was vicious (she was not) and she was not allowed anywhere near children or even adults until I was sure she was fine and tolerant.
