Your point of view is short term. I take the longer view: wars/civil wars frequently happen when you count in centuries.

After all, it would have been technically possible for the Japanese to invade Australia if they had focused their WWII efforts on that goal.

In this scenario, an Australian populace with the Second Amendment would have meant a Japanese failure. A disarmed Australian population, not so.
