(17,573 posts)Are old black men less likely to oppose abortion?
Hoppy
(3,595 posts)Black men ain't shooting up abortion clinics. Black guys ain't the ones I see on teevee asking for my money to stop the murdering. I don't see pictures of black men on the hate line yelling murderer to women entering the abortion clinics.
But then, again, maybe I tune on to the wrong channels.
Carry on.

(17,573 posts)BUT, a) we don't know the race of the editorial writers she was responding to, and b) there are plenty of black men who are opposed to abortion. Given the power dynamics in this country, I'm pretty sure it isn't top of MOST black men's priorities to be vocal about abortion. But that doesn't make it impossible that they will be writing letters and spouting bullshit on this topic. I just don't think this is a highly race-based issue.
SCantiGOP
(13,862 posts)Several years ago The State newspaper in Columbia SC commissioned a poll on social/political issues. Black respondents were significantly more likely to agree with restrictions on abortion.
If you recall, the GOP put a gay marriage initiative on the Ohio ballot for W's re-election race in 2004 and lobbied hard in AA churches. Bush's thin margin of victory in Ohio ( without which he would have lost the election ) was widely attributed to an increase in the AA vote for the GOP, tied to the gay marriage issue.
The first issue may just be reflective of the South, but there is a lot of evidence that black voters who regularly attend church are more socially conservative than white voters.

(29,692 posts)it is. White men have been the rulers of many centuries and they have fusty old ideas that they are supreme and all others are lesser than and the fusty old white men think they can tell the lesser than thans what to do. They especially love telling women of all races how to behave just for them.

(16,140 posts)I'm not saying there are not blacks who are against abortion. I am saying, it is the white ones that get the air time and feel they need to put their views out there for everyone to see.

(21,995 posts)Abortion rights, voting rights and civil rights are all individual parts of the spectrum of Republican's desire to subjugate and control people.
I don't know whether there's a racial component to the abortion debate, but my impression reflects Hoppys observations in post #8, above. When abortion rights are being attacked, it's people like Jerry Falwell, Jr., Dr. James Dobson, Franklin Graham, Pat Robertson, Mike Huckabee and Ted Cruz who are the most vocal advocates of the so-called pro-life movement.
Regardless, Republicans want to control everything in our lives, except for our Second Amendment rights, of course.

(17,175 posts)... one would think misogynistic racists would be all in favor of anything that reduced the target population, especially if they also buy into the whole deal about welfare mothers popping out one baby after another and eating lobster on their tax dollars. However, consistency has never been the trademark of fanatics. And they can always claim that they want people to stop having sex, because of morality and all.

(17,175 posts)It's a proposition with a certain internal logic, but the outrage over supporting a dependent population appears to me to be too loud to support it. That it would apply to enslaving the women of the preferred race, I can agree with, but that comes from a different wellspring than racial hatred. Baldly, these men want their women to submit, but they want the other races to die. After all, except for the prison system, no use is made of these "slaves" by the ruling class. Is that an aspiration? It's possible, I suppose, but they have so many other potential slaves far away in East and South Asia.
The desire to cut all welfare, food stamps, etc, indicates that these people have no wish to support the oppressed class, but there is no indication that they have any plan or desire to use them.

They are outraged that the births of African-American and Latino children is outpacing the births of white children. That's what they are afraid of.

(46,179 posts)from my 80 yo mother, who fully supports abortion rights and adult consensual sexual freedom:
She says that all males should undergo a mandated vasectomy at puberty. At age 25 or later they could petition to have it reversed, after having educated themselves and established themselves as independently responsible for themselves.
That's her response to any suggestion that women's choices should be regulated by men.

(820 posts)Have you ever had unprotected sex with a woman? Did you ever have sex with a woman with whom you did not want to have a child? Did you leave it up to the woman to be responsible for contraception? If so, STFU about abortions. I'm sure a number of these anti-abortion men would have to sit down and shut up.
The truth is men can stop all abortions tonight, today, right now. If they would simply be responsible for the possibility of causing pregnancy or baring that just keep it in their pants.... Yeah that'll happen.

(23,156 posts)can simply not have one. I once said that to a truly obnoxious RW fundamentalist 14 your old boy I knew -- he loved trying to bait me on the abortion issue -- and he was stunned to complete silence for several minutes. At the end of which, he actually said, "I'm going to think very hard about what you said." Not sure if he ever changed his mind, but I think I did get him to rethink his position.
What angers me the most about almost all who oppose abortion is the sheer hypocrisy involved. All those men who have sex, presuming that the woman will deal with the birth control aspect, not even acknowledging that birth control can and does fail. Or telling a woman who is carrying a fetus that will die shortly after birth, or live an unknown length of life in pain or misery. Or there's a genetic defect of some sort. On and on.
NO ONE should ever judge someone else's decision to have an abortion. I don't care if some other woman would have one in circumstances where I'd have the baby. The simple truth is, I'm not that other woman. I'm only myself. I can only account for or defend my own personal decisions.
