Democracy and attempts to heal the racial divide or a militarized police force?

(58,728 posts)Trump and the rest of the right wing crowd will seize on this to push back on BLM and justify gratuitous use of force by cops. BLM is back on its heels making clear the fact that they would never support violence against police.
The timing is terrible in one respect. Here in SF, BLM backed out as Pride parade leaders because of the extra police presence following the Orlando shootings.

(3,580 posts)If enough angry scared people vote, Trump will keep the gop congress and even more state legislatures will be gop and the only safe right we will be left with is rkba. If we remain rational, Hillary and a dem senate will maintain the status quo. I frankly can live with that.

(2,955 posts)Officers will be even more jittery around minorities, and use Dallas to demonstrate why they need more military gadgets and firepower. In an ideal world, they'd consider how tensions between civilians and police got this bad. Most of this tension could be alleviated simply by holding more officers accountable when they screw up and shoot unarmed citizens.

(4,858 posts)...I think it probably will be contingent upon events. I personally feel like I'm waiting for the next shoe to drop. If there's more shootings, more bloodshed, maybe an assassination, if the far right Tea Party/Limbaugh assholes continue to stoke racial fires...then nothing good will come of this. Nothing at all. If we're lucky enough to get a respite from the violence, then maybe some dialogue between the police and the minority populations will begin, and we can make *some* progress. I do know this--if White America continues to regard the police as police, and Black America keeps regarding the police as an army of occupation, this country is doomed.

(79 posts)Apparently some group out of Houston made a "credible threat", and was plotting to drive up there and do it again. It's on CNN now.

What always follows: lip service and then...nothing.
Crazy people who mass murder strangers because they are representatives of a demographic will continue to be allowed to purchase weapons.

(65,616 posts)Shooting cops never does the civilian population any good, always the opposite. That is why, imo, shooting a cop is the worst thing someone with a cause can do.
