Do we know if it has anything to do with racially motivated violence?

The television has been nothing but an orgy of cop love since the Dallas shootings - to say it's not going to get any attention is stupid. It fits the narrative perfectly that cops are the ones whose lives are in danger and more important than the rest of us.

(106,212 posts)and then, if the reports that he grabbed a baliff's gun are correct, he wouldn't have been able to get a gun.

(10,996 posts)Honestly, that is the silliest attempt to cram a square peg in a round hole that I have seen in a long while.

(106,212 posts)Bailiffs aren't. The USA arms them because of the amount of guns the society has given itself.
This is interesting - several DUers don't seem able to comprehend the idea of unarmed security staff.
TeddyR
(2,493 posts)And oversee criminals who have been arrested. Pretty sure they are armed to control an already disarmed criminal populace, not because they'll encounter street violence.
On edit, this or something similar has happened before. Bailiffs are armed because they are dealing with criminals. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brian_Nichols
muriel_volestrangler
(106,212 posts)Being in handcuffs put them at a big disadvantage. Prison officers in the UK deal with criminals all the time, but they're not routinely armed.

muriel_volestrangler
(106,212 posts)What do you mean by 'professional witness'? That seems to have nothing at all to do with bailiffs, armed or not.
Gabi Hayes
(28,795 posts)but, if the security is as tight as it usually is, your point about the only place to get a gun is from the POLICE is right on
does this person think the guards in prison wear guns?
duh
why bother trying to reason. you just get straw men, or unintelligible argle bargle to quote one of our most esteemed SCOTUS corpses
muriel_volestrangler
(106,212 posts)I know British prison officers aren't normally armed. I can see that in the USA, they have to consider the chances of someone trying to break the prisoners free from a courthouse using weapons, and you have to make a courthouse much more accessible to the public than a prison - hence a need for guns, given the number the American public have.
ileus
(15,396 posts)When was that last attempt to break out a prisoner from the courthouse using firearms?
Even when all Americans are disarmed Bailiffs and deputies will be armed simply because of the violent folks they escort. Much like most prison guards are armed.
muriel_volestrangler
(106,212 posts)Examples:
Alaska: "Inside prisons, correctional officers generally work unarmed except for their self-defense training, a canister of pepper spray and a radio with a "man-down," or panic, button"
New York: "Correction officers are trained in the use of a firearm, but only certain post assignments require officers to be armed due to the potential threat of prisoners overpowering an officer. Officers assigned to prisoner transport units, outside hospital posts, exterior patrol posts, and security posts carry a firearm. "
