It is 30 miles one way through a very rural area, but it does have some benefits. We get to see nature in a variety of ways.
Here is a nursing Mother pronghorn antelope with twins.

And here is a ever vigilant prairie dog.

We also seen four cow elk, but they left before I could get the camera turned on.
I guess that is rush hour, out here.

(1,484 posts)Do you know if the Pronghorn and the Cow Elks can interbreed, sort of like Golden Retrievers and Labradors?

(825 posts)The elk is much bigger than the pronghorn.

(17,824 posts)I wish we had them here.

(825 posts)but when I was watching them today, I noticed that they were stalking and eating grasshoppers.
By the way, there are a lot of ranchers around here who would be glad to send them to you if
they were easily caught.
I have heard that they make good pets, but don't know anyone who has one.

(12,008 posts)I've been through there a few times on cross-country trips, but never spent much time there. I saw loads of animals growing up in semi-rural Michigan, but we never had anything like an antelope. I don't think I've ever even seen one in real life.

(3,872 posts)Looks like you're from my neck of the desert!
We have a little pronghorn herd that runs between Cottonwood & Sedona near 89A.
I used to see them all the time out in Prescott Valley when I lived on that side of Mingus Mountain.
I haven't seen prairie dogs here, but I have a few gophers in my garden I could do without

(825 posts)We are over south of Seligman and we have our share of gophers too. You would think that with the huge numbers of coyotes here, that they would keep the population of gophers down.
We see many pronghorn when going from Chino Valley to Prescott Valley to shop.
Here is another shot of the same three antelope.

(27,247 posts)It seems like they have made quite a comeback in the ensuing years. They are very graceful animals, as your wonderful pictures attest to.
And speaking of Post Office, this is what you could have bought there back in 1956:

(20,958 posts)must be the day for it (being treated to nature sightings). i had a couple of roseate spoonbills fly across the street in front on my car in morning commute traffic. not very rural here. suburban, actually. they were "teenagers" checking out the fresh rain in the culverts and retaining ponds. i guess they have to strike out on their own away from the populations at Cape Canaveral. i had to call the SO and let him know about it. great way to start the day
