(22,165 posts)I was shocked to see people suggesting she should chair the DNC ... I hated DWS, but do NOT want to see her replaced by someone (albeit very charismatic) that is a very conservative dem.

Three.
There was a lot of hostility directed against her, though I guess (hope) that was just primary stuff.

Gay rights: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tulsi_Gabbard
Gabbard is opposed to the Defense of Marriage Act and to a proposed state constitutional amendment that would define marriage as between a woman and a man.[112] She had opposed same-sex marriage at one time[21] but after her tour of duty in the Middle East supported repeal of the DOMA and became a co-sponsor the Respect for Marriage Act after her election to Congress,[113] as she had promised to do during her campaign.[114] She also asked Hawaii state legislators "to pass legislation that will ensure fair and equal treatment for all of Hawaii's citizens".
She appears to hold an "anti-Islamic position": Rep. Tulsi Gabbard: The Democrat that Republicans love https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/the-fix/wp/2015/10/15/rep-tulsi-gabbard-the-democrat-that-republicans-love-and-the-dnc-cant-control/
Gabbard has been glorified in the conservative media. Her criticism of Obama's failure to cite "Islamic extremism" earned her appearances on Fox News, and in April, the conservative National Review wrote a glowing profile about the "beautiful, tough young" Democrat "who's challenging Obama's foreign policy" (though the magazine's adjective-heavy headline didn't earn them any favors with feminists).
Her Liberal scorecard rating is an "F" : http://progressivepunch.org/scores.htm?house=house
U.S. Rep. Tulsi Gabbard was one of just 27 Democrats who sided with House Republicans today to pass "a bill to delay tax penalties for failing to buy health insurance this year under ObamaCare."
On Obamacare/ ACA
According to this article in The Hill, "The vote, which reflects growing Republican frustration with President Obama's selective implementation of the law, again shows some level of Democratic support for a legislative change to the law. Several House bills aimed at making the health law more transparent have also received support from a few dozen Democrats." https://www.votetulsi.com/node/846
Regarding Gun control:
Gabbard has declined to co-sponsor any common sense gun control legislation, including H.R.4269 the Assault Weapons Ban of 2015 which is co-sponsored by 125 of Gabbards fellow Democrats. Here are the other nine gun bills that Gabbard has NOT supported:
H.R.4748Imported Assault Weapons Ban of 2016
H.R.3926 Gun Violence Research Act
H.R.3411 Fix Gun Checks Act of 2015
H.R.2380 Gun Show Loophole Closing Act of 2015
H.R.1745 Support Assault Firearms Elimination and Reduction for our Streets Act
H.R.752 Large Capacity Ammunition Feeding Device Act
H.R.226 Keeping Guns from High Risk Individuals Act
H.R.225 Firearm Safety Act of 2015
H.R.224 To require the Surgeon General of the Public Health Service to submit to Congress an annual report on the effects of gun violence on public health.

(13 posts)Opposing DOMA was a good thing because it's gone!
Tulsi supports Equality & LGBTQ rights 100%, as her wiki states.
"Tulsi has advocated for LGBT Housing/Privacy rights, to end bullying and harassment in schools and has co-sponsored numerous bills including the Employment Non-Discrimination Act, the Respect for Marriage Act, the Healthy Families Act, the Equality Act and the Safe Schools Improvement Act. She has been endorsed by the Human Rights Campaign"
Cherry-picking 'progressive punch' is funny. If you move over 2 columns, she has a lifetime progressive rating of like 93% or something.
Tulsi respects Islam, the religion that the majority of Muslims peacefully practice, and is against Islamist extremists like ISIS, al Qaeda, al Nusra, Boko Haram, etc. who torture, murder gays and innocent people, including Muslims, in the name of their perverted interpretation of Islam.
This is what she says about spiritual Islam vs political, totalitarian Islamism:
"In order to defeat the terrorists who have declared war on the United States and the rest of the world, we need to understand their ideology. In other words, the war cant be won just militarily. We must defeat them in the ideological war, not just on the battlefield. In order to defeat their ideology, we need to recognize what their ideology is.
The ideology of these terrorists is Islamism. It is a radical political ideology of violent jihad aimed at bringing about an establishment of a totalitarian society governed by a particular interpretation of Islam as state law. Referring to terrorists as Islamist extremists is simply an accurate way to identify ISIS and other Islamist extremist organizations whose ideology is rooted in one form of Islamism or another.
The majority of Muslims are practicing the spiritual path of Islam within their own lives in a pluralistic, peaceful way. So by calling organizations like ISIS Islamic or Islamist extremists [emphasis hers], we are making a distinction between the vast majority of Muslims who are not extremists and a handful of those who are."
Tulsi is for sensible gun control and has cosponsored 6+ gun control bills, including military-style assault weapon ban.
I don't know if you noticed or not, but none of those bills you listed have come up for a vote because the House Republicans won't allow it. Many other Democrats also did not co-sponsor, but it means nothing and has nothing to do with 'support' or non.
--------
Bottom line - Tulsi's a progressive who cares about others; her speech was moving and honest.

Although I hated DWS with a passion (and am so glad she is gone) .... I do not want to see someone with as conservative a voting recording as Gabbard's chairing the DNC.
Arguments were offered that she will evolve .... that would be great, but I can't support someone chairing the DNC until AFTER they evolved.
On edit: I am trying to resolve the disconnect between those that supported the most liberal member of the senate and congress (I actually voted for Sanders, but was equally torn between Clinton and sanders) that have thrown all of this adoration behind a very conservative Dem ....? Is it solely based on her support for Sanders?
All metrics used to rank congress by liberalism or conservatism rank Gabbard as a conservative dem

For me it is a true disconnect. She gave a wonderful speech and is extremely charismatic .... but, her voting record is not something I support. I would be more supportive if she was representing a conservative district in a republican state (she would have no real choice) .... but she is not

.. whose voting record reflects that.
I will take a conservative democrat over a republican .... her speech was excellent, but pretending that her voting record has been anything but what is it has been is disingenuous at best.

(22,165 posts)UPDATED: Heres why the Hawaii LGBT Caucus doesnt support Rep. Tulsi Gabbards reelection campaign
All I ask is that people look at Gabbard's record and votes ... She is smart, charming and charismatic .... and a conservative democrat.

(1,474 posts)but due to pressure from her handlers and funders, she has determined it would be more convenient and more anti-Muslim to pretend to be supportive of LGBT people.
I've never understood why people give this rightwinger a free pass.
