I'm registered as Independent, but I've always voted Democrat (except once in a local sheriff contest). Still, I've kept my distance from identifying as Democrat, especially after the 1968 convention. I guess I had a lingering feeling that the Democrats weren't authentic.
After 44 years of voting, after nearly eight years enjoying President Obama, after these DNC speeches by Michelle Obama and Bill Clinton and many others, I have come to the conclusion, finally, that I'm a Democrat. We can do this. There is a difference between the parties. We CAN defeat the dark forces.
I'm a Democrat.

(6,861 posts)Yes, there will be times where you feel frustrated at the pace of change.
I've been a Democrat since I turned 18 in 1987, and have been frustrated myself at times, especially when I see Congress vote down good bills.
This is usually because Republicans attach what are known as riders or amendments to bills that force Democrats to vote against them. These riders/amendements are like poison pills that put Democrats in a Catch-22 situation.
So, when you wonder why things aren't going as well as they should, as quickly as they should, or why the f*** would Democrats vote against a certain bill, please look and see if a Republican attached a poison pill rider or amendment.
Change will happen, sometimes slower than we want, but it will happen. Just keep the faith and support the Democrats that want true change.
Welcome.
We WILL win.

(4,311 posts)I've been a Democrat since...well, since I was born, basically, but I registered at 18 and have voted a straight Democratic ticket ever since (like you, I have one exception, when a pro-choice Liberal Republican state senator (remember when there were still Liberal Republicans?) ran against an anti-choice Conservative Democrat).
I agree with you. There is a HUGE difference between the parties, and we CAN and WILL win in November. The future of the country and the world is at stake!
