She had passports before but her old passport expired 5 years ago. She did turn it in with her application.

He said they told him that this was a really good time to do it, and that they expect a big slow-down after September because there are a huge number of renewals pending.

Requiring passports. If you apply now, don't waste the 60 bucks. You'll be good.

according to how many apps they get. My renewal took 5 weeks and those are quicker to process. My son's new passport, that I got at a different time of year, took about 6 weeks. The hardest part is getting the apt at the post office to submit the application for a new passport. That took 11 days for some reason.

learned to put the passport in the room safe where I stay. I have 3 copies of the page with my photo: one is taped inside my suitcase, one I carry with me, the 3rd is left with someone at home...

scan it and email the image to yourself on an account that you can access from a public PC or via your mobile phone.

that way, if you lose it, you can access it without having to worry about a piece of paper.

for any police reports, etc.

Make a copy to keep in your luggage, and then scan and send one to yourself in an email, preferably on a service like google that's accessible from anywhere in the world.

Do this with all your travel documents as well as driver's license and your credit cards. You can simply take clear photos of them all as well, and email them to yourself.

if it is stolen. And that you can only get at a U.S. embassy or consulate. I had to get on a train from Turin to the closest embassy which was Milan (because I was in northern Italy, too far from Rome). I remember walking from the train station to the consulate, still suffering from a virus everyone on the trip had gotten, stopping at cafe bars on the way to use their bathrooms.

It was not a happy experience...never again!
