(14,449 posts)Requiring passports. If you apply now, don't waste the 60 bucks. You'll be good.

(14,532 posts)according to how many apps they get. My renewal took 5 weeks and those are quicker to process. My son's new passport, that I got at a different time of year, took about 6 weeks. The hardest part is getting the apt at the post office to submit the application for a new passport. That took 11 days for some reason.

(63,912 posts)learned to put the passport in the room safe where I stay. I have 3 copies of the page with my photo: one is taped inside my suitcase, one I carry with me, the 3rd is left with someone at home...

(4,993 posts)scan it and email the image to yourself on an account that you can access from a public PC or via your mobile phone.
that way, if you lose it, you can access it without having to worry about a piece of paper.

Make a copy to keep in your luggage, and then scan and send one to yourself in an email, preferably on a service like google that's accessible from anywhere in the world.
Do this with all your travel documents as well as driver's license and your credit cards. You can simply take clear photos of them all as well, and email them to yourself.

(63,912 posts)if it is stolen. And that you can only get at a U.S. embassy or consulate. I had to get on a train from Turin to the closest embassy which was Milan (because I was in northern Italy, too far from Rome). I remember walking from the train station to the consulate, still suffering from a virus everyone on the trip had gotten, stopping at cafe bars on the way to use their bathrooms.
It was not a happy experience...never again!
