(44,397 posts)Republican nominee Donald Trump is the first candidate to actually lose overall support based off of the convention in which he was nominated, according to new numbers from Gallup.
Following the Cleveland convention last month, 36 percent of adults said they were more likely to support the New York businessman, while 51 percent said they were less likely to vote for Trump.
According to Gallup this is the first time since the polling organization began asking questions in 1984 that a candidate saw more than half of respondents say they were less likely to vote for the candidate following the convention. The net minus 15 in vote sentiment was also a record. Mitt Romney's plus three rating in 2012 was the previous low for the Republican nominee.

(23,156 posts)Sort of like whoever gets the most delegates during the primary process gets the nomination. And once that candidate is the nominee, he or she is it.
And there's virtually no chance of any Republican making an independent run. For one thing, I believe it's already too late to get on the ballot in some states.
Nope, they're stuck with him. And they deserve him.

(10,857 posts)... Trump appears to have committed a couple of severe violations of the espionage codes, which may include enlisting the help of a foreign nation to commit espionage and sharing data from a classified document.
Trump is also, to virtually every thinking person's horror, an obvious case of Narcissistic Personality Disorder. That makes him a known and well-studied quantity, and exactly as easy to manipulate as George W. Bush was easy to manipulate.
Note also that Republicans have been wringing their hands for a year for a way to get the top two candidates out of the way--that's Trump and Cruz. They have a provision in their rules, Rule No. 9, which is just the ticket, if only they can convince Trump to resign, which he won't do unless he stands to lose more by staying in than he does by leaving.
Well, threatening to hit Trump with espionage charges (or other, more sordid charges) would be that way. Trump can be presented with the options of going on to an ignominious defeat, followed by potential prison time, or declaring victory and leaving the race. He'll declare victory and leave.
The RNC would almost certainly allow, nay, encourage Trump to leave; they would decide not to have another disastrous convention and instead do what they do the best: pick the candidate of their choice in a smoky back room, with no input from the filthy unwashed masses. RNC gets what they want--a better chance, and Democrats take the hit in the name of national security, and as usual get a harder life for it. But they have a stronger candidate than anyone Republicans can field and the damage Trump has already done may be insurmountable at this point.

(54 posts)What did the repubs expect from such a shitshow at the RNC? Also, one must take into consideration that these polls were taken before the Khan fiasco, which will sink Trump's numbers even further. Fantastic.

(7,963 posts)hence, why he was in a "virtual tie" with Hillary? and now they are saying it is -15? this doesn't sound like it was from his convention but rather OURS. and perhaps his little tweetfest with Mr. Khan.
