He generated shock at his willingness to be ever more outrageous, amazement that he had won support, wonder over whether he could ever do something so offensive as to be toxic, and fury at amoral words and actions.
Now, there is only sorrow at the depths to which Trump has plunged U.S. democracy and taken with him elected leaders who have always before respected country and self.
Trumps attack on the parents of a Muslim soldier who gave his life to save comrades-in-arms breaks the heart because he has made fair-game of two nation-loving citizen immigrants whose son heroically gave his life for country and because Republicans have held firm to Trumps suitability for the presidency.

The ones who have not totally denounced him and said they would campaign and vote against him have NOT respected country and self. They have no self-respect and no respect for the country whatsoever.

(23,707 posts)I mean, if there was ever one line I never expected any candidate to dare to cross, and survive, it would be insulting the troops. And yet here he is trashing fallen soldiers and still "on the map". Scary. i'll be interested to see what polls look like in a week or two after this Khan trashing has had some time to be digested by voters.

(14,682 posts)I am continually just gobsmacked at the power of "catapulting the propaganda" with consistent relentless lies on a "news" TV network and most all daytime hate talk radio over the last two decades.
For too many of them it has become a choice between a brazen incompetent fool and the Antichrist. For some of them quite literally. A simple "best of two evils" decision.

(60,956 posts)Though not as extreme, in 2002, it looked like NJ Democrats would be faced with the dilemma of voting for someone already seen as corrupt. Toricelli was our candidate and the Republican was pretty conservative and the Senate was at risk.
I already knew that no matter what else came out, I would vote for Toricelli even though it would be with great disgust. Fortunately, the party got him to resign and the wonderful ex Senator Lautenberg replaced him.
You may have noticed that the saner Republicans spoke of the Supreme Court as a reason why they had to win. The question is how many of the solid Republican base will either not vote or not vote for Trump. He is far worse than Toricelli was and he would be President, not Senator. I suspect there are many Republicans already in the place I was in 2002.
Getting 40 percent would mean a landslide for Clinton and may be as low as things realistically end up with a normal opponent. The question will be how many Republicans realize that he is not a normal choice.

(24,287 posts)I know we have weird people in this country (i.e., trump lovers) but I can't believe there are so many of them.
We'll have to wait and see-- but already there are encouraging signs.

(24,287 posts)Obama won twice (without cheating! what a concept). I think that the people who voted for Obama will vote for Hillary-- they wouldn't vote for dumdum. Those who voted for Nitt will probably mostly vote for dumdum, but even that's debatable because Nitt has been warning people OFF voting for DT.
But... who knows? I can't make heads or tails of a lot of the polls-- and we have three months still. Yikes
Anyway, get the red out, I hope you are wrong.
Cheers!

(14,031 posts)I think Hillary will take it in a landslide, any state that hasn't lost their minds to the 'baggers will go for her. I am a Kentuckian, so I see lots of people who have lost their minds to either the 'baggers or their RW Churches (the educated members of the religion group are the people who act as apologists for the extreme crazies and try to reword things in polite conversations). But there are enough 'bagger nuts for me to not dare put a political bumper sticker on my car.
So yes, there are a lot of Trump or bust people, but not enough in saner states to make him president.

(26,074 posts)I've actually become a reluctant fan of the before rancid Post. Today, they hit a home run, out of the park, with an awesome, true cover and equally sad and biting column. Drumpf is truly a disgrace to our country and it's so sad that we have such stupid people that actually are OK with having him be president. Look what the repugs have done, they have elevated ignorance to the point where it could destroy our union, and they are OK with that as long as they get to select the next SCOTUS. They have no morals, no caring, no empathy, all is just pure self-centered efforts for power and money. So disgusting.

(89,959 posts)Can be applied to a whole bunch of different situations happening now.
My personal new favorite: Mr. Khan, in his anguish over his son, has said in interviews several times by now - that Donald Trump has no empathy. And Khan specifically stated that a President NEEDS that empathy, that compassion, to be a good leader.
Anybody remember how dick "the war criminal" cheney sneered openly and publicly at the idea of empathy? Sneered, jeered, and scoffed. Thought it was stupid and useless and shameful and a sure sign of weakness. Curled his lip even harder than usual when he even spoke the word. And everybody played right along, and raised no objections. The BASTARD.
I think Mr. Khan is RIGHT.

(2,350 posts)On the Khan family are vile and dispicable.
But, his fascination with Putin, his lies about his knowing/ not knowing, meeting/not meeting with Putin, his lack of knowledge about Crimea and world affairs scare me more. I want to see his tax returns.
He is not fit to be POTUS of US.
And the crazies still support him. I don't think he has finished lying to the people.

(3,715 posts)...that Trump still continues to hold nearly unanimous support of the Republican base, he's generally polling within the margin of error against Hillary nationally - even with behavior so abhorrent and disqualifying that it should/would have knocked him out long ago.
Truth be told, I'm more afraid of Trump voters and supporters than I am of a Trump presidency.
