Take a close look at just how reprehensible a free market health care plan is, from a doctor herself . . .At this point I pulled both boys back into the office and explained that their care combined was well over one million dollars in the NICU. Since then heart surgeries, intensive care units stays, and home oxygen. If this were a Libertarian health care system no insurance would have covered them. Theyd have crafted a way to get out of it, by preexisting conditions or caps on costs per condition. Im a doctor and I couldnt have afforded the care they needed to survive. In countries without regulated health insurance parents have to pay in advance or their children dont even get admitted to the intensive care unit at birth. Even if Id sold my house when they were born and had a robust health savings account Id have been bankrupt by the time they were five or six weeks old.
His answer, Maybe we shouldnt be saving those kids. He looked embarrassed that hed said it.

(39,343 posts)Hi, are you naïve?
Would you like a Fair Tax bumper sticker?
Does all this talk of policy and politics go way over your head?
Do you like the idea of "sticking it to the Establishment Politicians", but don't know what that really means?
Do you like to share one liners on Facebook?
Congrats you might already be a Libertarian.

(24,461 posts)All they hear is "abolish the IRS".
See, the problem is
a) That's never going to happen.
b) By "abolishing the IRS", you're also abolishing the wealthy's two biggies: the Capital Gains and Estate Taxes.
c) That, in turn, leaves YOU, ME and all of us holding a 30% bag for everything the destitute poor (which, by giving the wealthy free money, there's going to be plenty of) can't pay for and the rich won't pay for.
d) Deficits and the Debt are going to soar, because cutting education, health and social services has short and long term repercussions.
e) Infrastructure is going to go in the shitter, because private institutions in no way, shape or form can handle the upkeep like the government can. Or even worse, they'd turn it into a for-profit competition.
F) is what this idea gets.

(46,179 posts)The ACA is better than a libertarian health care system as described...absolutely.
It still isn't that great. Under the ACA, there are still plenty of people...people WITH insurance, that can't afford care, myself included.
A truly GREAT system would be a national universal non-profit health care system, with care easily accessible and 100% free at point of service and paid for entirely by taxes.
THAT would be a great system.

(24,461 posts)Trust me, as a parent of a child with a pre-existing condition, I'm NO fan of the PPACA. "Qualify" doesn't mean "can afford". And I will NEVER forgive Lieberturd or Baucus, both Big Insurance/Big Pharma puppets, axing the one atom-speck of fairness that would have made this monumental - the Public Option. I hold those two fucks in the same regard I hold Dick Cheney or Dumbya. At least with the two latter knobs, they aren't passing themselves off as something they're not.
The problem with the Libertarian party is that they present themselves as the alternative of the two major parties but most of their domestic and economic "solutions" are just repackaged Dead Reagan crapola.
It's just laughable that this party thinks FDR Democrats like me are going to gravitate to a party that in some aspects is MORE reprehensible than Republicans as far as economics go. If you're going to be an "alternative", at least have that alternative be, you know, NOT rooted in sheer cruelty and blatant 20th century stupidity.

(46,179 posts)A bad one.
There are all kinds of alternatives out there. None of them are viable at this point. In the case of libertarian health care, I'm thankful.

They should be ashamed for trying to still sell that snake oil.
