Red Sox pull "racially insensitive" David Ortiz bobblehead
The Red Sox canceled a David Ortiz bobblehead giveaway only five hours before a game against the Yankees on Tuesday because they were deemed inaccurate and racially offensive.
The bobblehead was of Ortiz holding a microphone, a tribute to his famed, This is our [bleeping] city speech in 2013.
Team president Sam Kennedy saw the bobblehead for the first time on Tuesday and decided to cancel the promotion.
It was an inaccurate portrayal of David. It doesnt really look like David. No. 2, I personally thought it seemed to be an offensive portrayal of him and that the facial features were racially insensitive, Kennedy said.
If I was feeling this way, certainly other people would. So we pulled the plug.
Kennedy said the 15,000 bobbleheads would be returned to the manufacturer and a new model made. All ticketed fans for Tuesdays game will receive bobbleheads.
Kennedy said fans entering Fenway Park would receive a card with instructions how to receive the bobblehead at a future date.
The Globe learned that DBA, Inc., of Woodinville, Wash., manufactured the bobblehead. The company has worked with the Red Sox and many other teams in different sports on such giveaway items.
The company has yet to respond to a request for comment.
