http://politicalwire.com/archives/2012/06/14/reactions_to_obamas_speech.htmlPresident Obama gave a speech today that framed his re-election bid as a clear choice between government helping to lift the middle class and a return to Republican economic policies that led to a deep recession.
A few reactions:
Andrew Sullivan: "My bottom line? A home run. Simply constructed, carefully reframed, aggressive while positive: the Obamaites have been listening to critics and are responding. If this is his message, and if he is able to keep articulating it this clearly, he will win. And in my view, the experience of the last thorty years is that he should win. If I have to choose between a governing philosophy espoused by Bill Clinton or one espoused by George W. Bush, it's a no-brainer. And I can't stand Bill Clinton."
Greg Sargent: "The central idea in the speech -- that Washington is in a "stalemate" about how to move forward that only the American people can break -- was the answer to a clear strategic dilemma. Obama needs to figure out how to highlight GOP obstructionism of his policies in a way that will matter to the American people."
Ezra Klein: "One speech doesn't change an election, and this one won't, either. But the Obama campaign's line of attack does point to a difficulty for the Romney campaign in the coming months: Where can they show a sharp break with the policies of the Bush administration?"

(1,435 posts)and their unwillingness to raise revenue by having 1% earners pay their fair share of taxes. That is an increase of 4.5% on income of $250,000 or more. That increase only happens after the first $250,000.
He pointed out if we want to change that mindset; it is up to US to vote for a congress that will support him and his agenda. He can't do it alone, he needs us to give him partners to accomplish his and our goals, be they dem, gop or independent as long as they have country ahead of party representation. He has an american agenda for all americans, yes, even the rich do well if working and middle class do well. The 1% should pay their workers a fair wage and bring back the middle class and country back to the envy of the world.
The speech was about choice and his vision of the future versus the choice of the past policies which brought us to the 08 financial crisis, that was borne by the 98%.

(37,305 posts)Enough to give him more than what he had when he got into office which was the house and 60 votes in the senate.
Even with that he barely got his health care bill passed and it is not all that popular even with Dems.
If only he emphasized the economy from day 1 he could have shown what he does when he has all the tools. But the only thing people see that he did is the ACA.
I could be wrong but I don't think he is ambitious enough to capture the imagination of the populace enough to give him a filibuster proof senate. And unless he can get that he is only promising more of the same.

(21,475 posts)the rules for the filibuster, which Democrats can legally do, then we very well may have a chance to get America back on track as a decent nation once again. One that lives by the Golden Rule and does not engage in torture and encourage insanity as has been the rule for the last decade..

(37,305 posts)How easy is it to get rid of the filibuster?
Bandit
(21,475 posts)The filibuster can not be used at that time... as for the House we are just going to have to retake it...The House is a bit more fluid than the Senate and can change hands at any election since every single House memeber is up for election every two years, but in the Senate, they have a six year term and in each election only a few seats are up for election...The filibuster rules have to be amended or it can only get worse...

I do agree that the one thing that is missing is a bumpersticker slogan.... like Yes We Can but relating to current events.

(37,305 posts)But for the independent what does it say about what they get should he win and what Obama can accomplish with Republicans around.
Obama has a harder road, convincing the middle that even if you think this is bad, Romney is worse. Romney is the one who can promise the sun and the moon because he is unknown.

(63,912 posts)however, nice to see their on his side for a change....
I thought he was on his game with this speech. He carefully and effectively rebutted their arguments. He was fine...
I would suggest that he take on a more Truman-esque tone from now on. You know, the "do nothing" congress stuff. People need to know that it's the House that is holding hostage all the stuff he wants to do on stimulus. Attack them! All the better to get a better House of Reps. that we have now! Let's get rid of them!
