Not sure if it was from birth because if can't be genes. Have they found out how this happens? Does anyone know the origins of this? I never found out how it happens.

Today is also the birthday of Ben Hogan, the greatest striker of a golf ball ever. Naturally left handed but switched as a child.

and it may sound counterintuitive, but the club is pulled through the swing rather then pushed, and pulling with your favored/stronger arm makes for a longer, more accurate shot.

The contemporary golfer and right wing asshole extraordinaire, Phil Mickelson, is naturally right-handed, but plays golf left-handed.

In it, it said if the mother was left handed, the left handed child's brain would be a mirror image to that of a right handed person...maybe they have discovered more since?

Any way here is an interesting fact:

In both studies, left-handed mothers are more likely to have left-handed children than left-handed fathers.

It is interesting that one of my brothers was left handed until his first grade teacher made him change hands. That would be two of five children left handed.

One other odd group is where I recently retire from. My work group had ten people, at one time five of us were lefties.

Thank you for the links.

Hand to hand combat.

And this is why left-handed genes continue to find their way through life.

Having to search the room for those 1 or 2 (if you're lucky) left handed desks

Smudge marks from any writing object that is not completely dry

But being left handed like President Obama is awesome sauce!!!!!

Interestingly, I am ambidextrous in some areas. I golf right, use scissors with right hand, and play baseball right handed. I play tennis left handed and can only write with my left hand.

Désolé pour le mauvais jeu de mots.

(Edit: because, you see, 'gauche' means, 'left' in French, and 'gaucher' means, 'left-handed.'
That's why that's a pun. Whatever.)

The legendary voice of the Dodgers Vin Scully tells a story about growing up in Brooklyn. He attended Catholic grade school where he was routinely hit by nuns with a ruler on his left arm every time he tried to write left handed. No matter how much his parents pleaded with the nuns the beating continued. Not until they produced a letter from young Vins pediatrician saying that if they didn't end the beating he would indeed suffer permanent damage did the nuns stop.
Sadly, I have heard similar stories from others.

I believe it's not uncommon in identical twins but don't have any data to back it up.

I remember lefties in primary school (in the 50s, in Scotland) were forced to write with their right hand. And the word is "forced". Physical intimidation was used.

He is the only one in our family. He has some awful penmanship, but I think it is because they never worked on penmanship with him at school in the early grades. Kids mostly type on computers these days too.
