Milwaukee erupted in violence last night following officer involved shooting

http://www.nytimes.com/2016/08/14/us/violent-crowd-confronts-police-in-milwaukee-after-fatal-shooting.html?_r=0

Angry crowds confronted the police in Milwaukee on Saturday night, setting fires and throwing rocks, after an officer shot and killed a fleeing armed man earlier in the day.

One fire, at a gas station in the Sherman Park neighborhood, burned unattended while gunshots kept firefighters from extinguishing it. Other fires burned at an auto-parts store, a beauty supply company and a bank branch.

One police officer was hospitalized with a head injury after a brick was thrown through the window of his patrol car, Mayor Tom Barrett said at a news conference early Sunday morning.

The police made three arrests on unspecified charges during the mayhem, during which crowds of at least 200 people flooded the streets, said Assistant Chief James Harpole of the Milwaukee police.

The police said two uniformed officers stopped two people in a car at about 3:30 p.m. on Saturday. The police did not provide details on why the car was stopped.

Both occupants ran from the car. During the pursuit, Mr. Barrett said, an officer ordered the man to drop his gun and fired when he did not, striking the man in the chest and an arm. He said the gun held 23 rounds.

The gunman, described by the police as a 23-year-old Milwaukee man with a lengthy arrest record, died at the scene.

The handgun was taken in a burglary in March, the police said. The officer was not named, but officials said he was 24 and had been an officer for three years. He was placed on administrative duty.

About 600 hundred people were killed by officers this year. A vast majority got away with just a paid leave. POC fear cops every time they come around because they know reaching for their ID might get them shot.

Buildings and businesses are replaceable, lives aren't.

This reaction was not reasonable, proper or justified, but Milwaukee is in turmoil and LEO's deputizing themselves as judge, jury and executioner is not the answer, either.

"This is a warning cry," Milwaukee Alderman Khalif Rainey said. "Black people of Milwaukee are tired. They are tired of living under this oppression."

If they let him go and that individual later on kills someone, those LEO's are held accountable and can lose their jobs. They can not let a person get away who's brandishing a weapon no matter what because of that liability. Given the fact that the person killed has a long criminal record, I'd much rather they stop him on the spot, by any means nessisary.

“This entire community has sat back and witnessed how Milwaukee, Wis., has become the worst place to live for African-Americans in the entire country,” Rainey said. “Now this is a warning cry. Where do we go from here? Where do we go as a community from here?

“Do we continue – continue with the inequities, the injustice, the unemployment, the under-education, that creates these byproducts that we see this evening? … The black people of Milwaukee are tired. They’re tired of living under this oppression. This is their existence. This is their life. This is the life of their children."

“Now what has happened tonight may have not been right; I’m not justifying that. But no one can deny the fact that there’s problems, racial problems, here in Milwaukee, Wis., that have to be closely, not examined, but rectified. Rectify this immediately. Because if you don’t, this vision of downtown, all of that, you’re one day away. You’re one day away.”

Sun Aug 14, 2016, 09:38 AM
Aug 2016
What happened last night was not the result of greed or an ignorant display of anger as some have called it, but rather pain and frustration built up from over 400 years of oppression. The rioting and looting that occurred last night in the city of Milwaukee is a demand for justice on every level. We are one of the most segregated cities in the United States. We are the worst city for Black children to grow up. We are a city of inequities, of under-education, of unemployment, of oppression, of drug abuse, of violence.

What happened last night was a revolt and an uproar, not just a disturbance. The media has no problem to classify us at thugs, but have been reluctant to call a spade a spade. The people are angry. The people are fed up, and the people are demanding their freedom. The Coalition for Justice feels the pain.

Join us to clean up our community- to rebuild our community. To share love with our sisters and brothers, and to pray for our city.

If that's desired in those areas, then fine. There shouldn't be complaints about it later, though.

I'm amazed that mostly black neighborhoods don't have much higher numbers of black police. I would hope that would help alleviate some of the turmoil.

Not to mention bad economic conditions that's surely playing a role too.

Just so you know, I live in a mostly white community in Ohio.

I was shocked by how police treated people in Newark, NJ as shown in this PBS Frontline episode titled "Policing the Police": http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/frontline/film/policing-the-police/

People there were frisked for weapons and drugs simply because they "looked" suspicious. It's like they were already in prison! The cops around here linger around poor neighborhoods more frequently than others, but I've never seen that kind of behavior!

More education about that sort of thing strikes me as more effective than rioting. I've met many white people who see riots, and they just treat them as affirmation of their racial stereotypes.

When that point was raised in MO after Ferguson, someone pointed out that it wasn't an option in most cases because that many had been arrested and were not eligible.

With just 21,000 residents, Ferguson issued a staggering 32,975 arrest warrants for at least 16,000 different people. Not just parking tickets, Ferguson averaged 567 non-traffic related court cases per 1,000 residents—far and away the highest of any town in the state and more than twice as much as the town with the second highest average. To put that into perspective, the city of St. Louis had 80 non-traffic court cases per 1,000 residents and that's actually above the state average for Missouri.

http://www.dailykos.com/story/2015/3/16/1371220/-Ferguson-an-Apartheid-Police-State-21-000-residents-w-a-staggering-16-000-open-arrest-warrants

White supremacy and racial profiling drive the condition of having white cops policing people of color. It turned out that the STL police departments were exceptionally racist and white cops requested to be in majority black cities. The Jennings police dept. was so racist it was disbanded.

Missouri is not unique in having police forces that are dominated by a culture of white supremacy. It's happening all over the US and (as Will Smith pointed out) the only thing new is that it is being filmed. The injustice is minimized and all of the solutions offered by white people seem to put the onus on people of color to solve the problem of their own aggression and bigotry.

OF COURSE people are angry and sick of it.

Minimum qualifications for St. Louis County:

Must be free from conviction of a Felony. A Class “A” Misdemeanor conviction will be

Class A Misdemeanors include possession of up to 35 grams of marijuana, false imprisonment, domestic assault in the third degree, and shoplifting items valued at less than $500.

I didn't learn about it from just anyone. How many residents of Ferguson do you know well enough to call friends? How many people have you talked with who have made the inquiries both to administrators and people who have applied?

Does it say I live in Chesterfield?

Two friends live in Ferguson, both are black women. Why would that matter?

The issue isn't that white police officers are using excessive force against black men, it's that police officers are using excessive force against black men.

Chief Edward Flynn is saying that there was no use of force by police in crowd control -- no weapons were used and no tear gas either -- in spite of shots fired and one 16 year old girl was shot, and violence by crowd.

Also he was asked the race of the cop by the press, he said it was an experienced AA cop.

He's not afraid to fire cops who use lethal force which violates protocol. He was sued for firing the cop who killed Dontre Hamilton. And he won.
