http://www.nytimes.com/2016/08/14/us/violent-crowd-confronts-police-in-milwaukee-after-fatal-shooting.html?_r=0One fire, at a gas station in the Sherman Park neighborhood, burned unattended while gunshots kept firefighters from extinguishing it. Other fires burned at an auto-parts store, a beauty supply company and a bank branch.
One police officer was hospitalized with a head injury after a brick was thrown through the window of his patrol car, Mayor Tom Barrett said at a news conference early Sunday morning.
The police made three arrests on unspecified charges during the mayhem, during which crowds of at least 200 people flooded the streets, said Assistant Chief James Harpole of the Milwaukee police.

(18,101 posts)Both occupants ran from the car. During the pursuit, Mr. Barrett said, an officer ordered the man to drop his gun and fired when he did not, striking the man in the chest and an arm. He said the gun held 23 rounds.
The gunman, described by the police as a 23-year-old Milwaukee man with a lengthy arrest record, died at the scene.
The handgun was taken in a burglary in March, the police said. The officer was not named, but officials said he was 24 and had been an officer for three years. He was placed on administrative duty.

(27,985 posts)About 600 hundred people were killed by officers this year. A vast majority got away with just a paid leave. POC fear cops every time they come around because they know reaching for their ID might get them shot.
Buildings and businesses are replaceable, lives aren't.
This reaction was not reasonable, proper or justified, but Milwaukee is in turmoil and LEO's deputizing themselves as judge, jury and executioner is not the answer, either.
"This is a warning cry," Milwaukee Alderman Khalif Rainey said. "Black people of Milwaukee are tired. They are tired of living under this oppression."

(2,244 posts)If they let him go and that individual later on kills someone, those LEO's are held accountable and can lose their jobs. They can not let a person get away who's brandishing a weapon no matter what because of that liability. Given the fact that the person killed has a long criminal record, I'd much rather they stop him on the spot, by any means nessisary.

(27,985 posts)This entire community has sat back and witnessed how Milwaukee, Wis., has become the worst place to live for African-Americans in the entire country, Rainey said. Now this is a warning cry. Where do we go from here? Where do we go as a community from here?
Do we continue continue with the inequities, the injustice, the unemployment, the under-education, that creates these byproducts that we see this evening?
The black people of Milwaukee are tired. Theyre tired of living under this oppression. This is their existence. This is their life. This is the life of their children."
Now what has happened tonight may have not been right; Im not justifying that. But no one can deny the fact that theres problems, racial problems, here in Milwaukee, Wis., that have to be closely, not examined, but rectified. Rectify this immediately. Because if you dont, this vision of downtown, all of that, youre one day away. Youre one day away.

People of color are not our enemies, their are our friends and families. Just as patriotic as any whites out there.
People of color has been getting the short end of the stick forever. every since their ancesters were brought over on ships and sold to the highest bidder. Why can't the people in power not see where the problem lies?
The problem lies in how people of color are treated and have been treated since day one. We can do better than this and we have to do better than this or we all go down in a big blaze

I'd like to see more police move to non-violent means to subdue criminals too, of course. I'm actually surprised that dogs aren't used more frequently to catch them. That would probably get the "dogs are better than people" folks stirred up when they get killed. Ugh.

(15,526 posts)However, those kinds of videos are going to create self-imposed segregation and "white flight."
If that's desired in those areas, then fine. There shouldn't be complaints about it later, though.
I'm amazed that mostly black neighborhoods don't have much higher numbers of black police. I would hope that would help alleviate some of the turmoil.
Not to mention bad economic conditions that's surely playing a role too.

Buckeye_Democrat
(15,526 posts)Just so you know, I live in a mostly white community in Ohio.
I was shocked by how police treated people in Newark, NJ as shown in this PBS Frontline episode titled "Policing the Police": http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/frontline/film/policing-the-police/
People there were frisked for weapons and drugs simply because they "looked" suspicious. It's like they were already in prison! The cops around here linger around poor neighborhoods more frequently than others, but I've never seen that kind of behavior!
More education about that sort of thing strikes me as more effective than rioting. I've met many white people who see riots, and they just treat them as affirmation of their racial stereotypes.

White supremacy and racial profiling drive the condition of having white cops policing people of color. It turned out that the STL police departments were exceptionally racist and white cops requested to be in majority black cities. The Jennings police dept. was so racist it was disbanded.
Missouri is not unique in having police forces that are dominated by a culture of white supremacy. It's happening all over the US and (as Will Smith pointed out) the only thing new is that it is being filmed. The injustice is minimized and all of the solutions offered by white people seem to put the onus on people of color to solve the problem of their own aggression and bigotry.
OF COURSE people are angry and sick of it.
