My computer died and so while it was off being repaired ($300.00) I was stuck listening to good old fashioned AM and FM radio. I was really surprised how so much of it was RIGHT WING RADIO and or CHRISTIAN RIGHT radio. Since this was San Francisco, I did hear a few stations in Mandarin and Cantonese Chinese, or one or two East Indian stations.. But I ended up listening to Sports radio (Damn! Giants fell out of first place!) or George Noory on his Coast to Coast Radio. (I think I miss Art Bell, at least he wasn't political..) KGO talk radio is nothing like it used to be. Its all either Moderate or Rightwingish.. with a few exceptions, (John Rothman.) and KCBS News isn't news! Its a 30 second sound bite.. which makes you wish you at least had a newspaper to read something more in depth about what's going on in this country. The Olympics of course dominated and while visiting my doctor, the TV sets all had the stations on the Olympics. Good on Team USA for beating Poland in Volleyball.
I am rather disappointed and Frustrated with AM Radio. Its been so over taken by Religious Right wing Donald Trump supporters. (Gagged when Sean Hannity and Rush Limbaugh was on, I quickly turned it off. I can't even listen to right wingers any more. They are insane!!)
Glad to have my lap top back, and glad to have access to real news and events again. Maybe I should consider having a back up computer just in case this happens again. AM Radio is a desert wasteland with Republicans screaming in the foothills like Coyotes!

(4,858 posts)...yes, you were missed... ...and I'm sorry you had to subject yourself to the horror known as AM radio. I think I would prefer a visit from the Zombie Apocalypse, to having to deal with that for weeks on end...

(12,132 posts)I hope this doesn't seem selfish of me but I often counted on you for happy posts.
And I always pass along your music posts to my daughter. lol, she seems to like your music much more than mine.
If you have a tablet or smartphone, don't forget DU has a mobile site. A little bit tougher to navigate but will do in a pinch when the laptop is resting.

(41,861 posts)I have a "dumbphone". No internet at all. A tablet might be a nice idea eventually, at least It would be better than..."CBSNEWS! Donald Trump said something stupid last night, (plays clip very short) and that's the News on CBS RADIO!"
bleh!

(12,132 posts)until i got a tablet. lol My cell service provider (T-Mobile) was having a sale and I got a Samsung Galaxy tab A a few months ago and now I hardly ever have my laptop out. It's just much easier to use the tablet. Email and web-browsing and candy crushing. All are easier than lugging out my 17" Asus that weighs a half a ton and heats up like my car engine.

I don't think many realize how lame and uninformative our US MSM is unless they peruse international sources of news.
Welcome back!!!

(41,861 posts)The only thing good for my am transistor Radio is listening to Giants games, provided I am not in a spot where the signal is dead. (Not that I really missed much, ugh!! STOP losing games guys!!)

(30,761 posts)DSL modem, all the land line phones and the TV. I am not sure about the printer and freezer. They may be dying slowly. We are still getting back to normal here.
When we did get power and TV again, I, too, was surprised by how terrible the MSM is. That was our only source for almost a week.
I listen to BBC world news service on the weekends. It is informative. We need to know what the rest of the world is saying. (They were a great source during the height of the Brexit vote).

(714 posts)I have made it a point to listen to some am radio every day for the last 45 years. I have watched good radio stations destroyed and rebuild with the pure garbage on today. I loved talk radio when everyone could call in , discuss local or national issues and the host was usually neutral... maybe slightly left or right but everyone got to speak and was not ridiculed. I also remember about this time the order was put out in the evangelical churches to get on every local board they could to be able to be involved in the direction the community was taking. School boards, Planning & Zoning, any board at all and work up to local& state government... This approach worked and that is how the extremes started to take hold little by little in the modern republican party. I hope more than anything that Trump can be the straw that can break this horribly distorted Elephant's back.

(41,861 posts)I got tired of scanning the radio dial, finding WESTWOOD ONE RADIO EVERY WHERE and Sean Hanninty's sniveling little voice every where praising just how Donald Trump is the next Second coming of the son of God, and where ever he walks, rose petals form!

(38,326 posts)Sorry to hear about your computer troubles.
I'm posting this on a cheap chromebook. It makes a great backup computer and I can throw it in my luggage without much worry when I travel.
Whenever I travel I lose things, and some places I travel to there are people who would steal clean socks and soap along with a computer.
I didn't think I'd like a chromebook because I usually do most things from a bash shell, and there's a notorious DU troll who posts from a chromebook, but I do like it.
Sounds like an ad, doesn't it?
I'm always interested in what you have to say on DU.
Welcome back.

(41,861 posts)Pad might be the way to go. I am a news junkie, and listening to a 20 second news bite of how dog bites man, because he was on the "democrat party" is just so stupid!!

(41,861 posts)I been just wanting to listen to my friend KATE SCOTT who is the first woman to actually broadcast an NFL GAME (49ERS) preseason. Kate is wonderful. She does Traffic, Weather and Sports on SPORTS RADIO KNBR ... I just love her and she is a great friend!

(40,416 posts)When I lived in SoCal I listened to Ray Taliaferro. KGO would come in clear as a bell from hundreds of miles. Of course, KGO was messed up in Dec. 2011 when they fired all their classic announcers.
Now I live in rural west Michigan. We have lots of public radio here, but AM basically sucks.
Welcome back. And yes, I usually click through to your posts. I noticed you hadn't posted.

(41,861 posts)John Rothman is the only fairly decent one left, and he only appears if someone is out ill. Now I have stuck by KNBR and listen to the local sports jocks, like Tom Tolbert, Fitz and Brooks, and of course I love Kate Scott, (mentioned above) not to mention Mike Krukow and Duane Kuiper (both former pitchers for the SF Giants) talk about Giants Baseball. "attababe!"

I liked listening to Bernie Ward, but alas, it seems he was creepy Catholic.
My big Catholic family has creepy Catholic experience, which is why my mom is not Catholic, and one of the reasons I was sweating at my own Big Catholic Wedding. As a kid I'd witnessed a girl fight between my mom and a Catholic Bishop.
