Cal Carpenter
(4,959 posts)I think it is very important to understand the roots of this holiday, and how it has ultimately helped us collectively forget labor history in our country. May Day began here and has pretty much been forgotten while it continues to be a very important day in the rest of the world. Many argue it was deliberately co-opted and Labor Day in September was offered instead to draw attention away from the radicalism of May Day. In the last few years some activist workers groups have begun to rekindle the May Day spirit. As the article at the link says, there is surely room for 2 real workers rights holidays a year in this country, and I would say there is not only room, but a real need for it as well.
Please don't disregard this due to the source - the info is accurate whether or not one agrees with the ideology:

Kick in to the DU tip jar?
This week we're running a special pop-up mini fund drive. From Monday through Friday we're going ad-free for all registered members, and we're asking you to kick in to the DU tip jar to support the site and keep us financially healthy.
As a bonus, making a contribution will allow you to leave kudos for another DU member, and at the end of the week we'll recognize the DUers who you think make this community great.
