(14,920 posts)Voice of America and is immensely influential in media. Tucker can thank nepotism and family connections for his success.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dick_Carlson
"Richard Warner "Dick" Carlson (born 1941), an American journalist, was director of the Voice of America during the last six years of the Cold War. At the same time, he led Radio Marti broadcasting to Cuba, and was director of the U.S. Information Agency (USIA), WORLDNET and the USIA Documentary Film Service.[citation needed]
In 1991-92, he was U.S. ambassador to the Seychelles He returned to the U.S., to become president and ceo of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB), the parent company to PBS and National Public Radio, a position he held for six years.[1]
In 1997, he became president and ceo of King World Public Television, a subsidiary of King World Productions, the syndicator of Oprah, Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy, among other successful TV shows. Two years later, King World was purchased by CBS for $2.5 billion.[citation needed]
Carlson was the full-time Vice-Chairman of the Foundation for the Defense of Democracies, the counter terrorism institute in Washington, D.C. and Brussels, for eight years.[2]
Carlson also writes a weekly newspaper column, often about terrorism and national security, for the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review[3] and the Charleston Mercury.[4] He is a former political columnist for the Hill newspaper in Washington, D.C. (The Shadow Knows by Dick Carlson & Bill Regardie.)[citation needed]
Carlson has been a newspaper and wire service reporter, a magazine writer, a TV and radio correspondent, and a documentary filmmaker. He has written hundreds of by-lined newspaper and magazine stories and has won more than a dozen prestigious media awards.[citation needed]"
What happened to all the intelligence when little Fu - er - Tucker came along? Was his mother cheating on his "father"?

(62,444 posts)and why they can't find on e fucking Democrat in a population of 320 million people. I have even offered myself for no fee.
Apparently they get lots of questions about Roberts because they have a page about her on their website which I have been referred to several times.
Along with Carlson they have had such luminaries as Jonah Goldberg and that Feherty(?) guy. Can't remember some of the others.
All I can guess is that she knows where the bodies are buried.
We have pretty much turned NPR totally off. That is the last over the air station I could stand to listen to around here. The rest is crazy right wing or Jesus or shitty music.
As Olbermann once opined - media in this country runs from the very right wing to the extreme right wing. That is a paraphrase.

(108,990 posts)for her positions on abortion, contraception, and gay rights. And she has criticized the Church for a lack of charity.
So you've missed hearing her say those things, somehow.
I'm sure you've heard her say other things that are more right leaning. That's because she's a centrist.
http://www.cnsnews.com/blog/judie-brown/pro-abortion-cokie-roberts-merits-no-award-catholic-college
In her syndicated column with husband Steve Roberts, she has espoused abortion rights and ridiculed pro-lifers as "extremists." The Robertses characterized the federal ban on partial-birth abortion as "off the track" and "cynical game-playing" by pro-life activists.
In an April 2007 segment for ABC News, she said that she found the Supreme Court decision upholding this ban on partial-birth abortion "offensive as a woman."
Roberts has also publicly attacked Pope Benedict XVI as "really lacking in the theological virtue of charity," "an extremely controversial choice" and "the most conservative voice of Catholicism."
Again, in a syndicated column with her husband, she argued that the authority of the Catholic bishops has been significantly weakened, in part because of the teaching on homosexuality and contraception. "It's as if they are asking to be ignored," she wrote.

Americans overwhelmingly see public broadcasting as an unbiased information source," Rep. David Obey (Wis.), the ranking Democrat on the subcommittee, said in a statement. "Perhaps that's what the GOP finds so offensive about it. Republican leaders are trying to bring every facet of the federal government under their control. . Now they are trying to put their ideological stamp on public broadcasting."
NPR gets a portion of its funding from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and the CPB is funding by Congress.
From a Google search:
Typically, NPR member stations receive funds through on-air pledge drives, corporate underwriting, state and local governments, educational institutions, and the federally funded Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB).
CPBs appropriation is authorized by the Labor, Health and Human Services Subcommittee of the Appropriations Committee in Congress, currently headed by Tom Cole (R)of Oklahoma.
A snip from his wiki:
Cole has consistently voted against positions supported by lobbies for senior citizens, labor unions, and teachers' unions.
A pretty reliably conservative congressman leads the pull of the purse strings these days...

The bush43 administration ruined NPR and PBS by appointing some frightwinger douchecannon. Also, the Koch. Bros are big donors.
The news shows on NPR are all dead to me now. Only their weekend programming is worth listening to.

(17,135 posts)Why do you even have Cokie Roberts on the staff at NPR? She's a despicable republican hack. Her snide, sneering hatred of both President Obama and Hillary Clinton has no place on NPR or any trustworthy news outlet.
Cokie Roberts is way past her expiration date. My local NPR station used to be the most often-used location on my car radio; I never listen to it now because of the republican slant to your news, and Cokie Roberts is one of the biggest reasons why. I will never donate a cent to your biased, republican-slanted company. You didn't used to be as unfair and unbalanced as you are now.
Get rid of Cokie Roberts. She is doing nothing good for NPR.

(6,587 posts)simple fact that this is what you get when you have a corporate media. Doesn't matter if it is CBS, NBC, CNN, Fox or whatever because when the media went from being Independent to Corporate, they lost all objectivity & moved to a corporate priority which is the bottom line, what political ambitions the corporate leaders have so no longer does the media have as their job, report, inform, bipartisan.
Look how they are covering this election, actually putting Trump on the same level as Clinton, grading on the curve. We know every little detail about Clinton. How much has the media informed us about the past of Trump & his life & unsavory deals he has made, attempted bribes.
Not about Carlson or Roberts, it is about the corporate media's objective & what they want to achieve.

(21,754 posts)Three things:
1) the Koch brothers give them all they need
2) Over the course of a year, the amount of time they spend begging people for money is actually greater than the amount of time commercial stations spend on advertising
3) You could use the money to get yourself satellite radio where they actually have a progressive station with Stephanie Miller, Thom Hartmann, Mark Thompson, and so forth.

(30,676 posts)They stink of Right Wing favoritism. Of course they don't call it that. The way my PBS bosses put it:" hey the GOP is in the minority now, so we have to give them special attention. "
Wait, that was in 2000. In 2004 I was told, "hey, the GOP is in the majority now, so we have to give them special consideration."
Whatever, they hated the media studies from Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting, which reported that some 75% of onscreen guests,
year after year after year, are white male REPUBLICANS. PBS makes a pretense of fairness anyway.(I know, I did the face counts) But NPR doesn't.
