BLACK LIVES MATTER

UPDATE: Student in gorilla mask with bananas, nooses charged after Black Lives Matter face-off at ETSU

TONY CASEY • UPDATED YESTERDAY AT 5:03 PM
tcasey@johnsoncitypress.com

A barefoot man wearing overalls and a gorilla mask, trying to hand out noose-wrapped bananas to Black Lives Matter demonstrators, was taken away by East Tennessee State University public safety officers Wednesday afternoon.

According to a news release from the public safety office, freshman Tristan Rettke was charged with civil rights intimidation. Saying Rettke's actions "go against the values of our university where people come first and all are treated with dignity and respect," the university said the student has been placed on interim suspension. Criminal charges were pending before the local district attorney, and an internal student-conduct investigation was underway.

ETSU President Brian Noland held a press conference in the afternoon to speak out against what he saw Wednesday. And Noland did watch, almost in real time as it happened, via a video on a student's Facebook page.

"I was offended, but I was also saddened," Noland said about his personal response to Rettke's behavior. "The nation is not only raw, but it's healing."

Noland praised the Black Lives Matter demonstrators for their peaceful rally and handling of the disruption. He'd been in contact with many of those students through their academic careers at ETSU and was proud they reacted as such.

Colleges and universities, at least some of them, have long been
refuges for aberrant behaviors of many types. Heaven forbid
there should be national and state standards, or education, for incoming
freshmen on civil rights, boundaries, personal finance, criminal law, norms
of conduct. Sanity for living.

I haven't lived there for nearly 40 years, but it will always be the place of my birth and raising. Once proud to be from East Tennessee, not so much today. Tennessee has changed and not in a good way. The President of ETSU should b commended, along with the security personnel. The young protesters continued their peaceful protest and demonstrated dignity in the face of stark ugliness.

The plantation owners money should have been confiscated and given to the former slaves as payment for their years of forced labor or possibly had their lands taken away as well. The traitorous Confederacy got off far too easy and now we have assholes glorifying their treasonous and racist movement.

I think Lincoln's attempts at reconciliation were noble, but I don't think they healed the rift in the Union or did much to help race relations.

Has anything changed since the early 1960s when as an eleven year old I watched TV showing police and other thugs bashing blacks in the south?

This behaviour reveals deep seated prejudice rises up easily.

Is there any reason this activity is not Constitutionally protected?

To intimidate people based on race. The historical usage of the noose against black people for being black to me makes that cross the line. Not that the mask, overalls and bananas aren't absurdly offensively stupid and hurtful, but without the noose it just stays with the university giving him the boot in my opinion.
