Here he is at the opening to NASA's Destination Mars exhibit.

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER VISITOR COMPLEX, FL Sending humans on a Journey to Mars and developing strategies and hardware to accomplish the daunting task of getting Humans to Mars is NASAs agency wide goal and the goal of many space enthusiasts including Apollo 11 moonwalker Buzz Aldrin.
NASA is going full speed ahead developing the SLS Heavy lift rocket and Orion crew module with a maiden uncrewed launch from the Kennedy Space Center set for late 2018 to the Moon. Crewed Mars missions would follow by the 2030s.
In the marketplace of ideas, there are other competing and corollary proposals as well from government, companies and private citizens on pathways to the Red Planet. For example SpaceX CEO Elon Musk wants to establish a colony on Mars using an Interplanetary Transport System of SpaceX developed rockets and spaceships.
Last week I had the opportunity to ask Apollo 11 Moonwalker Buzz Aldrin for his thoughts about Humans to Mars and the role of commercial space following the Grand Opening ceremony for the new Destination Mars holographic exhibit at the Kennedy Space Center visitor complex in Florida.

Buzz is ultra cool!
I mean, look at him! He's 86 years old! The second person to put their foot on the Moon's surface. He still has it!

(40,416 posts)But I would sign up in a second for a Mars mission if Buzz Aldrin was on board.
That guy has the right stuff, which is what one wants. Even at 86 years old.
Plus, he punched Moon landing truther Bart Sibrel in the face. Who wouldn't? There's video:
BUZZ!!!!!

(10,201 posts)Especially since it was a superb punch. Perfectly squared, the punch begins in Buzz's right leg, carries up through the hips, body rotates through the punch and a good solid contact. Bart's left leg came up. Truly a beautiful punch.

I wonder if anyone sent this jerk the pictures of the recent moon probe showing the landing sites and LRV tracks.

(118,285 posts)The direct costs, and the actual cost of the information obtained, would be prohibitive
The Apollo program cost about $110 billion in current dollars. Missions 11, 12, 14, 15, 16, and 17 -- which actually involved moonwalks -- required about 2 person-months of life-support. A round-trip to Mars with a 6 person crew involves about 126 months of life support. The life support is the major cost, so crudely we might estimate the Mars mission would cost around 7 trillion in current dollars or about 12X current US defense spending
Getting the one-ton Curiosity Rover onto the surface of Mars cost around $2.5 billion. The trip took over 8 months, during which time NO life support was needed. It has now been collecting data for some years, during which time NO life support has been needed
Robotic exploration is practical and affordable

(40,416 posts)I agree. It would be expensive as Hell. Also, dangerous as Hell. Maybe an international effort?
Myself, I would rather support a permanent base on the Moon. Moon Base Alpha!
I support humans in space in general. We can do both robots and footprints.
