(8,401 posts). . . This was purely an act of cowardice, because they didn't want to be seen as going against the feelings of (some of) the 9-11 families, especially in a political year.
Don't get me wrong: the families of 9-11 victims deserve our utmost compassion and support. But for something like this, which has implications far beyond those families and even beyond Saudi Arabia, allowing these families' feelings -- perfectly valid though they certainly are -- to drive policy is just madness. As I said to one friend earlier today, I don't want this policy being driven by these families' feelings for the same reason that I don't want a guy whose wife was brutally murdered determining the constitutionality of the death penalty!
