last year and earlier this one - you didn't need another storm - same with Louisiana.

I heard that disasters this year alone in the US will cost over $11B

Forecasters: Flooding from Hurricane Matthew 'catastrophic'

Sunday Posted Oct 9, 2016 at 6:21 AM Updated Oct 9, 2016 at 6:28 AM
By Sarah Hauck

Hurricane Matthew swept through the Eastern Carolina area late Saturday night into the early morning hours Sunday, leaving in its wake widespread flooding which National Weather Service Newport/Morehead is calling, “catastrophic,” and “near Hurricane Floyd levels.”

Cedar Point and Swansboro saw heavy flooding while the dunes and sandbags that were reinforcing the northern end of North Topsail Island have been breached.

In Richlands and Beulaville, several roads were closed due to flooding or obstructions.

While the brunt of the Category 1 storm has moved out of the immediate area, rain and gusty winds will stick around during the clean-up efforts Sunday.

I hope your sister is OK!

I just want to thank you all for your responses to me yesterday. I finally got through to my sister late this morning. She is fine and was busy at work. (She manages a VA cemetery so a busy work day for her has an entirely different meaning than for most of us. It can also make for some darkly humorous conversation. Egads!) But all is well with her and her family. For that I am grateful as I am for DU, and people like the 3 of you, who extend a hand or a kind and helpful thought when one of us is in need.

Many thanks to you!

I was watching it like a hawk for my daughter and relatives who have a home on Topsail Beach.

The NC coast really dodged a bullet compared to inland. And Hilton Head was devastated. We go there on vacation every year...seeing the damage just makes me ill.

President Barack Obama has signed a disaster declaration for North Carolina, making federal funding available to individuals affected by Hurricane Matthew, according to a White House statement. The disaster declaration will provide assistance to affected residents in 10 North Carolina counties.

Federal funding is available to additional counties in partnership with local and state agencies.

Rescue workers saved 150 people from the third floor of town hall after rising flood waters swamped a tiny South Carolina town.

Resident Kathy Finger said the water in the Lumber River near Nichols started to rapidly rise Sunday night, more than a day after Hurricane Matthew dumped 15 inches of rain in nearby Mullins.

Finger called 911 around 10 p.m. Sunday when water reached her knees. She was moved to the town hall, where she and about 150 people had to wait overnight for the South Carolina National Guard and the state Department of Natural Resources to rescue them.

Finger says with the power out in Nichols, residents didn't get any warnings about the rising water.
