I think it's time to start talking about Hitler

It's time to suspend Godwin's law.

I'm 61 years old. I get to talk about Hitler. I was born in 1955, 10 years after Hitler died. 5 years later, when I was capable of understanding such things, memories were still fresh.

My father did not talk his way past a medical deferment (asthma) until it was too late to see action, but he did mention missing work the day the munitions factory blew up, killing several of his friends.

Our maid was Austrian and still emotionally shattered over losing friends and family in the war and being shunned for being on "the wrong side".

I visited Europe in the 70s and got to see the destruction first hand even years later. Statues in downtown London still had bullet holes. Cologne Cathedral was still in ruins. I saw The Wall.

It's happening again.

Having seen what I've seen, do you have any idea how terrified I am?

An authoritarian leader who keeps a copy of Hitler's speeches in his bedside table, quoting from The Protocols of the Elders of Zion, is encouraging his authoritarian, "facts don't matter" followers to challenge people at voting stations. Some have already said they're coming armed.

At his Nuremberg-style rallies, where he screams incoherent nonsense (remind you of anybody?), his followers beat people they feel (sorry, no thinking allowed) don't belong, like a scene right out of Pink Floyd's The Wall.

He has already declared the election fraudulent and told his followers to not accept the results and take matters into their own hands. That, my friends, is called a Putsch. Is there a beer hall handy?

Trump has no boundaries. When, not "if", when he gets in to power, four years is not going to be enough. The Presidency will be too restraining, the Constitution too constraining so he will simply declare himself Leader and Chancellor, or in German Führer und Reichskanzle. Then, with the economy crashing around him, he will look for resources and land. Hitler looked to the Caspian Sea. Trump will have his Wall to the South, but for resources will look North.

Canada joined the Allied effort to fight Hitler early. You Yanks were late to the parade. Canada made some very, very good friends back then who still remember. I used to work in a Government office surrounded by enormous beds of beautiful tulips. Always tulips. You see, the Dutch would send a shipment every year in gratitude for Canada's role in the liberation of Holland. The Brits were rather pleased with us, as were the French (may I remind you they have nukes even if we don't?) and a whole lot of other countries with standing armies who are watching in horror as America falls victim to an authoritarian, sociopathic narcissist.

We remember Hitler. We were there. We will be ready.

1. I don't think he can win this national election. If he were younger and more healthy I think I'd be more fearful. He's 70 years old at this point and doesn't look well. Would he be able to do all of this again in 4 years? Who knows.

2. His business has taken a MAJOR revenue and brand image "hit." His kids, who basically run the empire, have stated they are very concerned. His AC Casino just folded (pun intended.) His Hotels are having extreme difficulty with room rezzies. I'm sure a lot of people won't even bother interviewing at them for open positions. Will he want to further damage his business brand with another run? I'm not sure his kids would even allow him to do it.

3. I think when he loses he goes on major speaking tours making millions, his family starts their own right-wing cable news/talk station with Roger Ailes and Breitbart, and he sells lots of books/audio books/coffee mugs/T-shirts, etc.

They're not real swift in their "inventing catchy phraseology" skills. And they're not real swift, period.

Things that they find to be "witty" or "stirring", normal people find stupid or confusing.

That's why propagandic "art" always sucks. The "artists" are people who lack any of the human motivators that makes true art great and deeply appealing. Rightie propagandists have no humor, no intelligence, no human warmth, no deep values or lofty goals, no kindness or good interpersonal relationships, no positive emotions of any kind, no knowledge of history or science or how the world works or is today. Then they try to sum up their viewpoints with some great and catchy phrase, rallying cry, battlecry, song, artistic statement, artistic expression. And it just winds up being stupid and suck-y. They don't have any of the traits that engender the sensibilities needed to create and relay appealing messages.

Here's a helpful hint to the nazi dimwits: when your entire movement can only actually be defended, in debate, by saying "Shut up or I'll pound you. I have a gun.", that movement is bound to get its clock cleaned by all actual freedom loving Americans.

You losers don't have your 10%. So there.

- "Lügenpresse" - the concept that the mainstream-media spreads lies
- an aura of violence, brawls at rallies, open speculation about killing your opponents
- blaming foreigners and "others" for your problems: Jews/Communists -> Muslims/Immigrants
- Lie so big that nobody believes you'd be willing to lie about THAT. Lie so fast that it becomes impossible to fact-check you.
- racism
- fascism: radical and violent transformation of society and destruction of accepted norms -> Trump calls for assassinations and revolution. Promises not to accept result of election. Breaks every rule, tradition and decorum that US-politicians live by.

If Trump would run in the same political climate as Hitler, if the US had just embarassingly lost a HUGE war and if the US were just going through a "once-in-a-century" economic crisis, then Trump would win the 2016-election hands down.

If Trump had run in 2008, he might have won.

Teabaggers set up the country to fall victim to a fascist type candidate. They are the actual enemies of America.

On the night of Obamas Inauguration Mitch McConnell, Newt Gingrich, and numerous GOP leaders met to "conspire" to obstruct Obama in order to make him a one term President. As you know, they did not succeed at that, but they provided plenty of ammunition against him about being ineffective. The few short months when the Dems held the Senate and the House is often pointed to as a huge failure to pass a lot of progressive legislation, but they don't mention how the filibuster was used a record number of times during this period
.
The only monkey wrench thrown into the works was that a candidate of "their" choosing (Jeb!) was supposed to get the nomination. Along comes the Hitler wannabe, Trump, and pitches his tent on the plot they worked so hard to prepare. The GOP is totally responsible for this and most of them are far too cowardly to actively oppose the fascist. We must give credit where it is due, and hope (work) for the best.

Eliminating Trump would be a healthy start, but the GOP has to be reduced to rubble itself.

last year of the Greatest Generation. I cut my teeth on the stories my dad, brother, cousins, and uncles told about their service, watched film shorts about the war during Sat. matinees at the local theater, and listened as my mother and her friends told about their fears, war time rationing, blackouts, air raid drills, etc. In fact, my parents met at the local USO!

The one thing that is burned into my memory forever is the film clips of Jews being rescued from the concentration camps, and I grew up asking myself how anyone could vote for/follow/admire Hitler. Unfortunately, I now know, as I'm seeing a large segment of the USA following those "Good Germans" down the rabbit hole. It makes my blood run cold!

Trump and his followers will not "go gently into that good night". They may go underground, much like the John Birchers did (only to emerge later as the modern day Tea Party), but emerge they will. In the meantime, they will leave death and destruction in their wake. I have never feared for this country like I do right now.

I have no doubt that there will be chaos after the election, no matter who wins. If, God forbid, Trump wins, it will give his rabid, hateful, angry followers the green light to wage war against anyone not them. If Hillary wins, they will not be able to contain their anger. Buckle up, we're in for a very rough ride!

very fresh. I remember seeing bullet holes in buildings in Leningrad, with a little brass plaque next to it bearing the name of the person(s) the bullet killed. I saw bombed out churches in Kiev. I saw Babi Yar. I stood at the top of the ravine and looked down on the spot where 100,000 men, women, and children were murdered. The guides were all still talking about "The Great Patriotic War." My dad served in the Pacific, Marine Raider, 1st Marine Division, first wave at Guadalcanal. My dad's first cousin bombed Rommel's troops in North Africa, then helped push Mussolini's troops back into Italy. I too was born in 1955, and the memories were still fresh. My dad was still suffering from periodic bouts of malaria he contracted in some South Pacific hell hole.

All anybody has to do is watch Episode 1 of the awesome 1973 series, "The World at War" (available on YouTube) to see the terrifying parallels of today's Trumpites & Hitler's Brown Shirts. I see today's Republican cowards "going along" with Trump even though "he's a fool, a charlatan, a demagogue." That's just what the ruling class said about Hitler. Hitler ginned up fear and created "us vs. them", just like Trump is doing now. There are waaaay too many parallels. TrogL is right--folks our age and older remember.

If we don't stop this NOW, we are in big trouble.

This happened in France where the fascist Jean Marie Le Pen foisted his 'Holocaust-denying' fascism on France. His success was real but limited in terms of electoral support. Then he was succeeded as party leader of the National Front by his daughter, Marine. She has been very effective at building the movement up by being more 'reasonable' ('kinder and gentler'), avoiding using alarmingly fascist rhetoric while getting the same message across, etc.

The French National Front has grown under Marine's leadership and is becoming a serious threat in national elections. I think the 'next Trump' will have the opportunity to do the same. Of course, that may or may not work depending on who this is and whether Americans follow him or her like the French have done.

It would be the 4th Reich if Trump got in. He'll either anoint himself as king or end term limits and allow only Saddam-like elections where you either vote him or to jail. It's looking more and more like he's planning to start a coupe after the election, but President Obama will shut him down real quick. We just have to get out and vote and make sure Hillary wins.

Beyond the hate, Hitler can mostly attribute his dictatorial powers to the elimination of freedoms of the press and speech. Trump has shown a similar disrespect to opposing media coverage.

I also don't think it's a coincidence that the GOP nominated Trump, given their more militaristic attitudes. My brother worked with a very old physicist from Germany who observed the rise of Hitler, and he insisted that it was Germany's long tradition of militarism that allowed the Nazis to achieve any success. He told my brother it would happen in the USA someday unless more Americans didn't embrace it so much.
