A lot of people don't know there was a 49 star flag from July 4, 1959 to July 4, 1960. I have one of those unique flags.

Why was it 49 stars? Good trivia question.

ETA: I'm guessing the U.S. Code provides that the star officially be added on the Independence Day following statehood.

You know the first poster mentioning NM should have triggered that for me. I knew Arizona was right for sure, but drew a blank on the "Land of Enchantment". Yav, do i get extra credit for knowing NM's tag line?
