Years ago there was a show called The $64,000 Question. A contestant got the questions in advance, and his life was ruined. Charles Van Doren was his name. He got the questions, and his life was ruined. But Hillary, Hillary Clinton got the questionthink of it.
That would be cite Slate

(26,727 posts)Interestingly, this show was the other way around. They tried to keep a woman from winning by asking tougher questions...
She won anyway

I suspect that he thought the Wikileaks with the email about Donna Brazile meant she had gotten debate questions for Hillary Clinton ahead of time.
First, Donna Brazile was talking about getting interview questions ahead of time because of her contacts with the networks.
Second, that was years ago and could have nothing to do with the Clinton campaign this year.
Third, even if Trump had gotten the questions ahead of time he a) could not have given a good answer and b) would have screwed it up even if he'd bothered to prepare.

(9,461 posts)was given one of the questions or all of the questions in advance for an interview that she did. Since WikiLeaks has previously tampered with emails we don't know if that is true, but it was an interview, not a debate. Trump claimed that Hillary was given the questions in advance for the debate(s) which is why she both won and seemed so well prepared.
That isn't just an off the wall Trump lie. He is trying to get people to confuse the two at best, or at least question whether she was given the debate questions in advance at worst. There was plenty of right wing hype about the email showing Hillary had supposedly been given the question in advance for that interview, so I'm sure more than one right wing media site will report it as very likely or true. (None will mention that Fox ran that debate and if they were going to cheat for anyone it would be the GOP).
With the game show example, it seems Trump was fed lines and he got them confused. Van Doren was from a highly regarded literary family with a lot of Pulitzers and such. He had a phD and a masters in Astrophysics, so he was quite intelligent. The producers gave him the answers in advance because they wanted him to take out a guy who had been on a winning streak and no one could defeat him. Van Doren became hugely popular and famous, even being on the cover of Time. When the scandal unfolded, his reputation suffered and so on.
Trump's supposed comparison is that like Van Doren, Hillary was given the answers in advance, which is how she won, but the cheating would come back to haunt her. It's basically a very complicated lie that the right has been working on for some time. It's Hillary is corrupt part 2,348.

(36,416 posts)But prior to watching it, I admit I thought Charles Van Doren was busted on the The $64,000 Question, too. I got curious and Googled it during the film and read the whole sordid story.
