Ever since FBI Director James Comey sent a letter to members of Congress about new emails found related to Hillary Clinton, people on both the right and left have questioned the timing of his disclosure.

Kurt Eichenwald of Newsweek Magazine, has had quite a bit to say about Comey’s actions:

How Do You Dump the FBI Director?

Yes. The president may remove a director with adequate cause. President Clinton dismissed Director William Sessions halfway through his term on charges that Sessions misused official resources—such as using FBI aircraft for personal trips.

Congress can also remove an FBI director by impeachment. Article II, Section 4 of the Constitution says that any civil officer can be removed if the Senate convicts him of "treason,bribery, or other high crimes and misdemeanors." A two-thirds vote is required for conviction. (Mueller, of course, has not been charged with any of these.)

In any situation, however, it is much more likely that the president would ask an FBI director to resign rather than fire him. Clinton dismissed Sessions only after he refused to resign.

It would make this even a more political action than it already is. Honestly, I think Comey will ultimately resign in shame because what he did reflects very poorly on the FBI as an organization. People inside the organization will demand it.

I would suggest Loretta Lynch begin a review as soon as November 9th and send an recommendation to President as quickly as is reasonable. Otherwise, it would do even more damage to what's left of our constitutional republic.
