(34,136 posts)1985 Hurricane Kate hit this area (Tallahassee, Florida) as a Cat 1 storm just a few days before Thanksgiving (night of November 21).
We had no power for a week and even though we had stockpiled water for the horses and for the house we ran out on the fifth day. With over twenty horses on the farm, that was a serious problem!
I loaded a bunch of 55 gallon drums into the horse trailer, drove to a friend's house where they had power, and filled all those drums. Drove back to the farm, filled the water troughs, backed the trailer next to the house so we could dip water for the toilets out, and took a break. Just as I sat down the power came back on.
I've got to handle it to the power company, they have some great timing.

(268,967 posts)I fear for the flooding and land slides but some states have been facing severe drought.
By the way DR in particular and Puerto Rica to a lesser extent had some very serious flooding. Folks died in DR.

(34,136 posts)The projections are reassuring for this area. On the other hand, the areas likely to be hit don't need more grief. Even if they have a drought, the kind of rain you get from a hurricane will only wash away soil and not saturate the ground like they need.
Maybe it will fall apart, and provide needed rain in a softer way.
