Since I am on a roll how could union workers vote for Trump when he won't unionize his Vegas hotel?

So much for solidarity.

There is something going on here beside loss of jobs or concern about loss of jobs.

Maybe it is because most of the wait staff are composed of the other.

Trump and Hill split the union vote. She only won it by mid single digits.

who was terrible for unions.

Indeed, Trump got as many union votes as Reagan did for his second term (in 1980, Reagan got even more union votes). It does not surprise me at all.

That suggests the vote is as much cultural as economic.

are working class heroes that built this country. They did nothing of the sort nor did the previous generation of union sell outs.

They don't have a clue about anything to do with the labor movement. They don't realize that their jobs would be low paying-slave labor if it wasn't for the real union people decades ago. They think that as long as they have their union jobs, they can afford to say fuck everyone else.

However back in the day my friend's dad was a retired UAW worker. He loved his union and the Democratic party. Ditto, for my uncle who who was a retired IBEW worker.

After all, Cheeto Benito said American workers are paid too much and that's why we can't compete in the world market.

They should have been repelled for the sole reason Trump won't negotiate with his hotel staff.

Some of the hotel/casino owners have made peace with them. I assume there is a benefit to dealing with an organized work force.

usually feel they were forced to join a union in order to get a job and resent the dues coming out of the paycheck. Don't expect much solidarity with other unions.

They don't seem to get the point until they get close to retirement time or until the bosses do something monumentally stupid to remind them that the union is there because the bosses are bastards.

Me? I've had union jobs and non union jobs and union jobs are better.

Close, IMO but not deep enough.

I worked for a large western retail chain owned by Kroger and many felt the UFCW was next to worthless. Older employess rubbed it in our faces that they're eligible for cadillac pensions while we're stuck with shitty 401(k)'s and that they get sweet, sweet health coverage but under our contract it was craptastic Kaiser.

The resentment comes in when a young employee hearing of all these goodies goes to the union man and asks "When will I become eligible for the pension?" only to be told "Sorry, your contract doesn't include a defined benefit pension like the previous ones."

One exasperated service clerk asked the union rep at a meet 'n' greet "So what the fuck are we paying money to you for? You haven't done shit for us! The old timers get gold and we get dirt. They get Sunday premium but we only get base. How have you fought for us?"

The reply? A shoulder shrug and "You get what the contract allows for".

This, my Union preferring friend, is why there is a metric shit ton of resentment among union workers. It's apparent they had balls back in the day when negotiating but now they seem to just rubber stamp the company's wishlist.

As for not getting the point until the realize they need the union, the reason I left employment at the company was because I was literally cussed out by a manager IN FRONT OF CUSTOMERS. When I approached our steward to file a grievance all I got was the trademark UFCW shoulder shrug.

and I know you're telling the absolute truth about all the union benefits that are no longer there, bargained away to keep people working and being paid during shitty merger after shitty hostile takeover after shitty buyout. Pensions that allowed people to retire in dignity before inflation ate them up are long gone and those 401K plans will just lower your welfare check and food stamps when you're too old and sick to work at anything.

My last union jobs were nursing jobs and it made a huge difference in the way we were treated. Retail? Not so much in those union jobs, not even when the wages were better and the pensions in place. Retail workers are always fed a diet of as much shit as they can cram down your throats.

You did a much better job than I did in explaining why there is no union solidarity these days. Thank you.
