Are We Ready to Stand up for Those Trump Will Attack?

Muslims? Immigrants? Poor People? Women? Hispanics? African-Americans? Native Americans? LGBTQI People? Others with Little Privilege?

Once Trump takes office, there will be focused attacks on a broad sector of people with less privilege than many of us. Will those people have to defend themselves, or will we stand up for them and stand between them and the forces that will be on the attack?

This is going to be a test. No question about it. How we respond will tell a story. I hope we will all pledge to defend those who have little power to defend themselves.

Surveying my block in a residential neighborhood in St. Paul, MN, I see that over half of the homes are occupied by people of color and immigrants. Only two homes are rentals, so my neighbors own their homes. Will they be like the Japanese-Americans in WWII, who were sent to internment camps and who lost everything they had built up? It is a real worry.

I had a college friend who was born in the Manzanar Camp in California. Her parents and grandparents were there, too, and lost everything while interned. Their business. Their home. Everything. She told me that her parents never really recovered from that experience. The stress, she said, killed her grandparents, who became ill while interned.

We must not let that story be repeated. We must stand for those people who are threatened by a Trump administration.

I am not elderly but I am disabled. I fear for my financial stability because I am one of those people you can not tell that I am disabled by just looking at me and talking to me in general. People have gotten on my ass about lying about being disabled just because I do not LOOK it and I fear I will lose my income, health benefits, and low income housing just because I do not LOOK disabled. I am always on the look out to stand up for those who might be getting harassed by haters but I do not know how I could really help. I am always told to call and write to my congressperson but I hate to say this people like me can do that until they are blue in the face and it will not make a difference.

I'm 36, in great health (physically) but I'm receiving SSDI as a result of severe psychiatric problems.

I don't know what your story is (and I'm not trying to pry or even ask) but most of the time I'm out in public people are seeing me on my good days. They wrongfully assume that I'm fine most of the time or that I'm faking or exaggerating my issues.

I've even found that my own wife, kids, and the rest of my family often don't fully understand what I'm dealing with either. "Why can't you just pull yourself together?" Or " just put on your big boy pants and deal with life like everyone else!"

Similar to what you said, incarceration would impact the benefits I receive that my family depends on. Me personally, I could care less what happens to me. I'd be perfectly happy living in a tent in the middle of the woods or spending the rest of my life in an institution. That's where all of my friends are...

Those non-visible issues are a bitch to deal with. Aside from dealing with only the issue itself, you have to deal with the burden of the stigma that goes with it too.

I completely get what you are dealing with and the urge and desire to help and make the world s better place.

are both mental and physical both from birth and an accident. I am 49 and basically healthy also. I discovered a few months ago that I can not even handle a part time job no matter how hard I tried to handle it. I have people in my life who knew I could not handle that but bit their lips and let me find out for myself and I know others who think I just refuse to grow up. I get selfish and fear what can happen to me but then I see there are others who would have it worse and I feel protective over them.

called out for the racism it was. Too many gave him a pass back then especially the media. And this seems to have emboldened Trump all the more. It needs to end.

Any and all attacks based on a person's race, gender, age, or sexual orientation by Trump and his cohorts needs to be aggressively called out and put to a stop.

I hope that Trump is already starting to feel the pressure and starts to understand that his racist and unethical plans will be met with great resistance. it's a sad state of affairs that we are even at this point in America and one can only hope this era of a racist presence in the White House is very short lived.

I'd like the word Resistance to once again change from a verb to noun. A multi-issue movement that all of us recognize and is locked and loaded for any response to regressive actions from this near fascist dictatorship. A brand to rally around and fight and then overwhelm the Trump brand.

87. We Shall Overcome

Dec 2016

When I saw a (since discredited) story about a Muslim family being harassed on a plane I tried to think of a good response from the rest of the passengers. I wondered if I'd have the guts to start singing We Shall Overcome. And then I started wondering how many people know the song!!! I read somewhere that in a random group of people the only songs you can count on all of them knowing are Happy Birthday and Auld Lang Syne.

What are good gestures of support???

I have already thought of this. I guess if it comes to it I can shelter someone in my home. My life has been boring pretty much, and pretty easy the last few years. So I will not be the one to look away this is the moment of a test of our character and souls. Of course until I leave in terror on the fast train out of here! Coward or courage? I guess I'll find out what I'm made of.

He will attack anyone in the media who does not knuckle under. I know how people here feel about our complicit media. If they are attacked, are we going to stand up for them? I think we have to, even though they have acted like quislings.

I don't think that there will be too many instances to actually test my conviction.

As a father of two young girls (ages 6 and 8) I would be right up there to set an example that they could be proud of.

Other than getting locked up in prison for more than a month (which would result in my disability retirement being suspended (my family depends on that)) I really have nothing to lose. Physically I'm in great shape. I just have a few issues with PTSD and suicide that would turn me into a hell of a fighter if the situation dictates.

I joined the army with the misguided intent to stand up and fight for those who can't. In Iraq, I didn't do any of that and I feel pangs of guilt as a result. To have the opportunity to actually stand up for someone being bullied would validate so much of my life for me.

I'm ready.

I sure as hell am. I've been researching what Paul Ryan's attack on health care and the SNAP program would do to the disabled, the elderly and the children of a Mom living in poverty. 30 - 40 MILLION Americans will lose their health care if Ryan has anything to say about it and he's got plenty to say once you start tracking him down across the Internet. How could I possibly stand by and watch him end the SNAP program and have all those poor little kids go hungry? I'll do anything I possibly can to help those who are going to be savaged in this strange country I no longer recognize. If we can't help one another, what's the point?

a stateside branch in a couple years, now, with a RW SCOTUS and systemic rethug dominance, no fucking way. London it shall remain. That sickening new Religious Freedom Act is insane. I fully expect gay rights/marriage, civil rights act, voting rights act, etc to be trampled in the ground over the next 4 to 8 years.

Chillingly horrific times may lie ahead for America.

Take comfort in small victories. I must admit I can't get my head around America's religiosity. I'm glad we don't have that over here, even the tramps don't want it.

the endangered ones will have to stand up for themselves, with NO expectation of mass help from anyone. Rosewood, Tulsa, Atlanta, Detroit, New Orleans, Elaine Arkansas, "the Negro Hoocaust: Lynching and Race Riots 1880-1950 Ferguson Missouri, Sanford Florida,. All I have to do is google(wikipedia) the worst race riots in ameriKKKan history, starting with the nativist(white colonization of then amerika) period 19th century 'Trail of Tears' to 20th century 'Wounded Knee' massacre to know where I could end up. My compatriots and I on the barricades waiting for that cruise missile, drone or militarized police invasion. Period.

But someone starts shit in my vicinity, my cane and I will Stand Strong together.

My biggest sadness is that I am too ill to be raising hell.
My biggest fear is that being a disabled woman puts me on the Hater's radar. I'm lucky, but other people like me, they lose medical insurance, they lose Social Security or Disability payments, they're dead. Literally.

I too am a disabled woman living in highly conservative rural Colorado. When I read about what Ryan hopes to do to us, it scares me to death. He wants to make SSI/SSDI vanish and abolish the SNAP program. I am terrified that I may become homeless or lose my medical care. Either one of those two things would be the death of me quite literally and thousands of others as well. On my good days I fight back as hard as I can. On my bad days, I retreat only to return and fight again. I refuse to allow anyone to destroy my spirit. God bless you, my friend.

It's a scary time for a lot of folks. I'm not sure that comfortable people (assuming there are any left?) truly understand the fear of those of us who are vulnerable. We're dismissed as exaggerating, fear-mongering, being paranoid, and so forth. But the dangers are real, tangible, and all too plausible.

Stay as strong as you can manage, take the best care of yourself that you can, and try to surround yourself with people who can & will help you when the shit hits the fan.

120. I signed up just to answer this question
Fri Dec 2, 2016, 11:00 PM
Dec 2016

Been a lurker for IDK how long, but I created an account to answer this with a resounding YES I AM!!!

The results of this election have lit a fire under me like nothing has in a long time. I was part of the silent majority before election night. The silent majority who thought he was a joke and surely people are smarter than this, right?

But now that this nightmare is reality? I will NOT be silent. This has given me purpose. I will use my time, money and energy to make my voice heard. I will take my elected officials to task and make it clear the ways I expect them to protect their constituents. I will volunteer at my local Democratic Committee. I'll spearhead or petition for initiatives. I will be at City Council meetings speaking. Shit...I just might run for an office. I'll walk with women into Planned Parenthood. I'll protest and march. I'll boycott. I'll write letters to every editor. I'll volunteer for get out the vote orgs. I'll learn.

I will be damned if I'm going to sit by and wait to see what this toilet swirl of a man and his dropped deuce administration do to try and put us all back in the dark ages. I'll be damned if I'm going to worry about sending my son off to some made-for-profit war this shit stain of a human is going to inevitably get us into. I'll be damned if I have to watch my gay friends cry, or have my employees worried about their illegal family members. I'm strong. I usually subscribe to the theory of live and let live, agree to disagree, don't start no problems there will be no problems...until you get on my radar. This man has awakened the sleeping giant in me. I will be one of the voices that make him wish he was deaf.

This site has brought me so much info and comfort. Thanks for being here. (This is my first post and IDK what kicking the thread means, so let me know if I did something inappropriate by my reply.)

Kicking a thread is just posting any reply, as you did, which kicks the thread to the top of the forum's thread list. Keeps it visible. If you see K&R that means kick and rec, which you can do by clicking the rec button on the bottom left of an OP.
