Muslims? Immigrants? Poor People? Women? Hispanics? African-Americans? Native Americans? LGBTQI People? Others with Little Privilege?
Once Trump takes office, there will be focused attacks on a broad sector of people with less privilege than many of us. Will those people have to defend themselves, or will we stand up for them and stand between them and the forces that will be on the attack?
This is going to be a test. No question about it. How we respond will tell a story. I hope we will all pledge to defend those who have little power to defend themselves.
Edit to add: Please kick this thread if you're ready...

(146,281 posts)Surveying my block in a residential neighborhood in St. Paul, MN, I see that over half of the homes are occupied by people of color and immigrants. Only two homes are rentals, so my neighbors own their homes. Will they be like the Japanese-Americans in WWII, who were sent to internment camps and who lost everything they had built up? It is a real worry.
I had a college friend who was born in the Manzanar Camp in California. Her parents and grandparents were there, too, and lost everything while interned. Their business. Their home. Everything. She told me that her parents never really recovered from that experience. The stress, she said, killed her grandparents, who became ill while interned.
We must not let that story be repeated. We must stand for those people who are threatened by a Trump administration.

(11,686 posts)I am not elderly but I am disabled. I fear for my financial stability because I am one of those people you can not tell that I am disabled by just looking at me and talking to me in general. People have gotten on my ass about lying about being disabled just because I do not LOOK it and I fear I will lose my income, health benefits, and low income housing just because I do not LOOK disabled. I am always on the look out to stand up for those who might be getting harassed by haters but I do not know how I could really help. I am always told to call and write to my congressperson but I hate to say this people like me can do that until they are blue in the face and it will not make a difference.

(3,557 posts)I'm 36, in great health (physically) but I'm receiving SSDI as a result of severe psychiatric problems.
I don't know what your story is (and I'm not trying to pry or even ask) but most of the time I'm out in public people are seeing me on my good days. They wrongfully assume that I'm fine most of the time or that I'm faking or exaggerating my issues.
I've even found that my own wife, kids, and the rest of my family often don't fully understand what I'm dealing with either. "Why can't you just pull yourself together?" Or " just put on your big boy pants and deal with life like everyone else!"
Similar to what you said, incarceration would impact the benefits I receive that my family depends on. Me personally, I could care less what happens to me. I'd be perfectly happy living in a tent in the middle of the woods or spending the rest of my life in an institution. That's where all of my friends are...
Those non-visible issues are a bitch to deal with. Aside from dealing with only the issue itself, you have to deal with the burden of the stigma that goes with it too.
I completely get what you are dealing with and the urge and desire to help and make the world s better place.

(11,686 posts)are both mental and physical both from birth and an accident. I am 49 and basically healthy also. I discovered a few months ago that I can not even handle a part time job no matter how hard I tried to handle it. I have people in my life who knew I could not handle that but bit their lips and let me find out for myself and I know others who think I just refuse to grow up. I get selfish and fear what can happen to me but then I see there are others who would have it worse and I feel protective over them.

Any and all attacks based on a person's race, gender, age, or sexual orientation by Trump and his cohorts needs to be aggressively called out and put to a stop.
I hope that Trump is already starting to feel the pressure and starts to understand that his racist and unethical plans will be met with great resistance. it's a sad state of affairs that we are even at this point in America and one can only hope this era of a racist presence in the White House is very short lived.

(3,557 posts)I don't think that there will be too many instances to actually test my conviction.
As a father of two young girls (ages 6 and 8) I would be right up there to set an example that they could be proud of.
Other than getting locked up in prison for more than a month (which would result in my disability retirement being suspended (my family depends on that)) I really have nothing to lose. Physically I'm in great shape. I just have a few issues with PTSD and suicide that would turn me into a hell of a fighter if the situation dictates.
I joined the army with the misguided intent to stand up and fight for those who can't. In Iraq, I didn't do any of that and I feel pangs of guilt as a result. To have the opportunity to actually stand up for someone being bullied would validate so much of my life for me.
I'm ready.

(1,002 posts)I sure as hell am. I've been researching what Paul Ryan's attack on health care and the SNAP program would do to the disabled, the elderly and the children of a Mom living in poverty. 30 - 40 MILLION Americans will lose their health care if Ryan has anything to say about it and he's got plenty to say once you start tracking him down across the Internet. How could I possibly stand by and watch him end the SNAP program and have all those poor little kids go hungry? I'll do anything I possibly can to help those who are going to be savaged in this strange country I no longer recognize. If we can't help one another, what's the point?

He wants to make SSI/SSDI vanish and abolish the SNAP program. I am terrified that I may become homeless or lose my medical care. Either one of those two things would be the death of me quite literally and thousands of others as well. On my good days I fight back as hard as I can. (406 posts)Been a lurker for IDK how long, but I created an account to answer this with a resounding YES I AM!!!
The results of this election have lit a fire under me like nothing has in a long time. I was part of the silent majority before election night. The silent majority who thought he was a joke and surely people are smarter than this, right?
But now that this nightmare is reality? I will NOT be silent. This has given me purpose. I will use my time, money and energy to make my voice heard. I will take my elected officials to task and make it clear the ways I expect them to protect their constituents. I will volunteer at my local Democratic Committee. I'll spearhead or petition for initiatives. I will be at City Council meetings speaking. Shit...I just might run for an office. I'll walk with women into Planned Parenthood. I'll protest and march. I'll boycott. I'll write letters to every editor. I'll volunteer for get out the vote orgs. I'll learn.
I will be damned if I'm going to sit by and wait to see what this toilet swirl of a man and his dropped deuce administration do to try and put us all back in the dark ages. I'll be damned if I'm going to worry about sending my son off to some made-for-profit war this shit stain of a human is going to inevitably get us into. I'll be damned if I have to watch my gay friends cry, or have my employees worried about their illegal family members. I'm strong. I usually subscribe to the theory of live and let live, agree to disagree, don't start no problems there will be no problems...until you get on my radar. This man has awakened the sleeping giant in me. I will be one of the voices that make him wish he was deaf.
