(46,703 posts)The mayor of our city broke every Sunshine Law rule in the book by attending our Commerce and Industry Board meetings in 1996. That alone was not the rule-breaker. He went over the line when he directly participated in the process, talking up one business that threatened to leave the municipality. And then the mayor double-downed by using his influence to make a spot on the Commerce board for the landlord who would have lost rent from the tenant, if the tenant left.
In the end, not only did the business leave the city limits, but the landlord was given unthinkable access into the government process. He was identified by the city as an authority and whatever facts he spewed to the city regarding other projects was considered Gospel. They never fact-checked him. His lies still stand to this day.
