Hillary Clintons new makeup-free look signals a return to the uncompromising idealism of Hillary Rodham
In the weeks since America elected Donald Trump president, the businessman turned president-elect has largely dominated the news cycle. But his former opponent hasnt completely receded from the national spotlight. A day after her concession speech, Hillary Clinton was spotted hiking in the woods of upstate New York. Not long after, a supporter connected with her in a Rhode Island bookstore. And there have been more formal appearances as well, like her November 16 speech at a Childrens Defense Fund event. All of these Clinton post-election sightings, though different in circumstance, are connected by a single, important thread. In a sharp break from her decades on the national stage, Clinton is no longer wearing visible makeup.

And so on one level, seeing Clinton sans makeup feels a bit sad, like an admission that her political career has come to an end. Gone is the carefully crafted visage, the cosmetics-as-war-paint armor of a woman determined to do battle for her country. In its place is a vulnerable, unguarded woman, the flawed candidate the media spent months dissecting.
But theres also something freeingand maybe even hopefulabout Clintons decision to go barefaced. For almost 40 years, Clintons been forced to walk a very thin line: to be powerful yet feminine, beautiful yet not self-obsessed, maternal yet still able to make time for the needs of the nation. Makeup has always been a way to signal that, whatever calculating, ambitious qualities she may possess, shes still just a mother and grandmother at heart, someone you could just as easily bake cookies with as discuss national security.
With her face unpainted, its almost as if Clinton is returning to an earlier iteration, reclaiming her identity as the accomplished, aggressive lawyer Hillary Rodham, who pursued success while rejecting the rules put forth by the patriarchy. And why not? For the past three decades, Clinton played by those rules with dedication and aplomb, and she still couldnt break that highest, hardest glass ceiling. Perhaps its time to throw out the rulebook and start again, beginning with the conviction that women, like men, aremore than madonnas or whores or angels or sluts or any of the other categories we routinely box half the population into. If theres any silver lining to this election mess, its that after 40 years of scrutiny and stricture, Hillary Clinton is finally, triumphantly, human again.

Goddess I love her for this, more than ever. She is a role model for all women. Hillary is a truly courageous woman. Makes me cry for the America that was to blind to see.

(42,278 posts)I'm right there with her. Never wore much makeup and I have severe chemical sensitivities. Makeup, particularly mascara, makes my eyes itch.

It's too bad that women feel such pressure to paint their faces.
And don't get me started on high heels . . .

(17,884 posts)My opinion on such doesn't count for much, me being male and all. To me it's just societal, cultural bullshit. Do and be whatever makes you happy.
And Secretary Clinton looks fabulous.

(108,959 posts)that my (eventual) husband didn't love makeup. That has saved me a lot of time and effort over the years!

(64,861 posts)Even when we were younger, she wore little. She was partial to some blush, and occasionally some eye make-up, but then to glam it up for the rock band thing.
Other than that, she has been pretty close to make up free the whole time we've been "we" and that was 1978.
I love my high heels but not much into makeup. I think it's up to the individual to choose. I love my skin without anything on it.

(4,252 posts)I am the same age as Hilary. The last couple years I stopped wearing makeup. Before i wore lipstick, eyeliner and eyeshadow sometimes. I ditched my heels 10 years ago. I felt make up was pretending. I feel free. I let my brunette go silver 16 years ago. I am myself. I like myself.

(83,654 posts)Ditched my heels about 30 years ago. I have never worn much makeup. However I still color my hair.
I like you and like myself too.

(5,953 posts)One thing I always admired about her was her absolute refusal to get any "work" don't on her face. ('Fuck you, I EARNED every one of these wrinkles with years of experience!') Same goes for Angela Merkel.

(19,558 posts)She needs to finally relax and just do what makes her happy. Wear her hair the way she likes, the clothes she wants and ditch the makeup if she likes. Surround herself with friends and loved ones, spend time with her daughter and granddaughter. Work on the causes close to her heart, and raise a middle finger to everyone who thinks it's somehow their right to scrutinize her choices. She's a private citizen now, and for the first time in four decades she's truly free.
I wish her happiness and peace.

(6,133 posts)Randi Rhodes said she should wear makeup. It doesn't make a difference to me. I don't know. I guess it makes a difference. I just like smart women. Why do ugly Wall Street guys get a pass?

(3,077 posts)It's funny and sad how big of a deal was made about her looks but looks have nothing to do with qualifications. They are irrelevant. I think it is more important to be at peace and comfortable in your own skin. She really looks like she is at peace and free now and that's a lovely thing. Make up, no make up, do your thing.

(9,664 posts)my wife in everyday life uses none of that crap. She is beautiful always was and always will be.
IMHO I feel that make-up is just another way men subjugate women. Applying is a time waster and a money drain. Why apply? I have asked most of our female friends, most say they feel "naked without.
I don't understand.

(11,649 posts)the way i looked so i had a facelift and eye job. i wear very little makeup -- some mascara, a little powder and blush. when you get older "less is more".
now i get botox and fillers. i'm happy with the choices i've made.

(41,967 posts)Your body--your business. And, here's the thing, while I work in nursing, an area dominated by women we don't get penalized for a few wrinkles and grey hair--other professions are youth oriented, looking younger and prettier is practically a survival mechanism. Plus it's fun to feel attractive.
DesertFlower
(11,649 posts)i did for me. i've always been very honest about it, but i've gotten some nasty remarks from other women.
ismnotwasm
(41,967 posts)Don't wear it very often--but I like it. With the caveat I like it on males and females. Once the cosmetics industry starts tapping into producing abd selling to men, And once society stops judging women for not wearing it and men for wearing it--I'll like it even better.
Self decoration is something human have always been into, that a bare-faced woman is a poignant as Hillary Clinton means we have a long way to go.
