(224 posts)They never learn and sadly this time we will all pay the price. She and so many others that voted for Trump and republicans in general, do so because they want to believe something that is factually impossible. She wanted to believe in Trump, because he said he was going to shake up the establishment, but she didn't listen to one damn thing that actually came out of his mouth, or his history of shading business dealings, and just in general his racism and hostility towards immigrants and pretty much everyone else that is not a straight, white conservative male.
The truly sad part is that she will fall for this shit again. Nothing changes.

(16,078 posts)None. When they lose their jobs...gee, that's what you voted for.
When they lose their social security and medicare...well, you asked for that, why complain when you get what you voted for?
Sound cruel, but what they have done to our children's future is worse.

(996 posts)What do you mean you don't want pre existing conditions to come back? This is what you voted for.
What do you mean you don't want Medicare privatized? This is what you voted for.
What do you mean you don't want Wall Street barrons running government? This is what you voted for.
What do you mean you don't want social security cut? This is what you voted for.
Bettie
(16,078 posts)because they thought they were only voting for minorities getting out of "their" country.
And when they realize what the agenda they voted for is, they will believe they deserve sympathy for all they will lose.

(996 posts)But one has to remember that most Trump voters were regular GOP voters who were voting for the Republican nominee no matter what. We can target and win with the voters who thought he was different than your garden variety GOPer and more importantly with those who thought both candidates were the same so they sat out.
We do this with a two pronged attack: point out what voting for Trump (and any other Republican) gets you while at the same time offering a different way.

(37,157 posts)Trump looks out for Number Trump. Period.
Once he has what he wants from you, you can take a hike. "Sue me! We'll see who lasts longer." He's done that consistently for decades. Gave him your vote and didn't get what you voted for? Sue him, and see who lasts longer.

(25,430 posts)In an odd way, that gives me a small amount of hope. I will never understand why people like this would vote for Trump in the first place, but in all likelihood, we're stuck with him, and the more of his supporters who figure out that they've been shafted, the better our chances of turning it around.
I guess it's a little ironic that she's talking about government making false promises right after she voted for one of the biggest liars in political history.

(14,914 posts)As long as she thought it was just everyone else, she was fine with it. If Mnuchin's name hadn't come into play, she would still be on board.

(25,430 posts)It's similar to anti-gay politicians who suddenly have an epiphany and become more tolerant when one of their kids comes out.
Once it becomes personal, then it's an issue. Prior to that, it's just "other" people who are being affected, so who cares?
That is, of course, one of the basic differences between liberals and conservatives. Liberals generally understand how life affects other people before they're personally affected. Conservatives generally don't care unless or until they're personally affected. Sometimes, not even then - Strom Thurmond comes to mind.
But that's why most people care about anything. Because it affects them personally.

Did she make the worst choice possible, given the current situation? - YES.

Our elected officials made a very bad decision, and we may never get the chance to fix it.

(11,996 posts)"In 1998, she bought a triplex for $248,000 in Hawthorne, California, not too far from Los Angeles International Airport.
She rented out two of the units and lived in the third. Colebrook refinanced her mortgage in order to renovate the property and help buy additional homes to generate rental income.
By the time the financial crisis struck in 2008, she had an interest-only mortgage on the triplex known as a "pick-a-payment" loan. Her monthly payments ran as high as $2,000 and only covered the interest on the debt. Then she got ensnarled in the economic downturn.
"All my tenants lost their jobs in the crash," Colebrook said. "They couldn't pay. It was a knock-on effect."

(25,817 posts)completely insane.
Back when I was buying the place I'm currently in, a financial advisor suggested an interest-only loan to me so I could buy something bigger. I told him there was no way I'd do that.
So now I'm "stuck" (irony glyph here) in a 900 sq foot two bedroom two bath townhouse that, while smaller than I'd prefer, is perfectly adequate. Not too mention that at this point, seven years into a 30 year mortgage, I have decent equity.
What makes Colebrook's story especially unfortunate is that she started out doing the right thing, buying an income property. Had she stayed with just that one, she might well have been able to ride through the downturn. I don't even want to say she got greedy, because she was doing something that is often advised: buy income property.
But she still ought to have known better than to believe Donald.

(100,043 posts)They will gladly cheer when Donald Trump talks about "draining the swamp", then ignore it when he goes and nominates the same batch of assholes who tanked DC in the first place. They ignore that 180K jobs were created in November, but will gladly cheer and defend him when he saves 800 jobs from going to Mexico. Oh and that's another thing - he sent 1300 jobs to Mexico - that country he wanted to build a wall around, and they don't give a shit!
