Fast forward to Summer 2017. Conversation between Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump.

Putin: I am mobilizing the Russian Army to move into the Baltic States. We need to secure Russia against NATO aggression.

Trump: Vladimir, you know I love you, but that's going to upset a lot of people on my end. Isn't there anything you could do to work it out?

Putin: Well, let's see.....how about this? You give me Alaska instead, and I'll only move into Estonia. Latvia and Lithuania I'll leave alone....for now.

Trump: I think we have ourselves a deal, Vlad.

Putin: You do know the Art of the Deal, Donald. Great book. Very well ghost-written.

Trump: Always a pleasure, Vlad. Hey, I'm sending over Mike Flynn your way. Make sure you give him some extra servings of Borsht made from your mother's secret recipe, why don't you? It's really good. Not Trump Tower Grill good, but still really good.

Putin: Of course, of course.

At a time like this all bets are off. Nobody really knows if he'll honor longstanding treaties or pacts or come to the defense of someone threatened by an aggressive despot. It could get interesting if he decides he wants the Pentagon to do something they know is a terrible idea or not do something they believe is critically important. Maybe the best anybody can do right now is to work overtime perfecting worst-case scenario contingency plans for just about everything under the sun.
