As a part of Islam Appreciation week, female students across campus became hijabis for the day stepping into the shoes of female Muslims on campus.
The event, hosted by the University of Wisconsin Muslim Student Association and Wisconsin Union Directorate Global Connection, aimed to normalize hijabs and address Islamophobia on campus.
Farhat Bhuiyan, one of the organizers of the event, said one of the main goals is to normalize Muslim female practices. She said hijabs dont always mean that a person is Muslim, they often do.
Throughout the day, Bhuiyan said she received both positive and negative feedback. She said that the negative feedback suggested it was cultural appropriation or offensive.

Love seeing these students stand up against hate and islamophobia. Stepping into someone elses shoes for a day... what a concept! I hope this is a growing trend.

(64,619 posts)of course, there are many reasons for a woman to wear a head scarf beyond religion. There have already been reports of women being attacked because of head scarfs that aren't even Muslim. Discernment is not a strong trait amongst the typical hater.

(5,417 posts)But I'm against the oppression that forces many women to wear a hijab in a lot of places.
I don't know if this is really a good thing or not.

(14,337 posts)Who is forcing these women to join? BTW, besides honoring the way Mary, Mother of Jesus, dressed, they also want to distinguish themselves from other women in society, even of their own religion. Should Amish women not be allowed to dress the way they do either? Hindu women?
Should male clergy also not wear religious garments, of any religion, to set themselves apart from the general society? No more turbans for Sika males, or yamakas (spelling) for Jewish men? Just applies to women?
Unfortunately, the bigoted, ignorant people in our society will target anybody who doesn't look, and dress just like them.

What I am talking about is the idea that UW students would wear the hijab as some sort of show of solidarity. There are much better ways to do that.
