Philippines' deadly drug war praised by Donald Trump, says Rodrigo Duterte

US President-elect Donald Trump has praised Philippines leader Rodrigo Duterte for his controversial war on drugs in which thousands have died, Duterte said on Saturday following a phone call between the leaders.

The Philippine president called Trump on Friday evening to congratulate him on his victory and Trump wished him “success” in his controversial crackdown, in which 4,800 people have been killed since June, according to Duterte.

“He was quite sensitive also to our worry about drugs. And he wishes me well ... in my campaign and he said that ... we are doing it as a sovereign nation, the right way,” Duterte said in a statement.

An aide to the Philippines president earlier said Trump invited him to the White House next year during a “very engaging, animated” phone conversation.

In speeches made after his inauguration on June 30, Duterte urged citizens to kill suspected criminals and drug addicts. He said he would order police to adopt a shoot-to-kill policy, and would offer them a bounty for dead suspects.

President Duterte has alleged that the Philippines is becoming a "narco-state" in order to justify the so-called war on drugs. There is little evidence to show this is true. The Philippines has a low prevalence rate of drug users, compared to the global average, according to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).

I would suspect the outcome would be closer to a Duterte policy than any other.

Indeed, much of the Nation and world have become anesthetized to the ignorance, stupidity, and incompetence of Trump; constant exposure to Trump’s ignorance, stupidity, and incompetence have rendered everyone immune to experiencing outrage.

On 28 November Duterte appeared to threaten that human rights workers would be targeted: "The human rights [defenders] say I kill. If I say: 'Okay, I'll stop'. They [drug users] will multiply. When harvest time comes, there will be more of them who will die. Then I will include you among them because you let them multiply." Amnesty International Philippines stated that Duterte was "inciting hate towards anyone who expresses dissent on his war against drugs." The National Alliance against Killings Philippines stated: "His comment - that human rights is part of the drug problem and, as such, human rights advocates should be targeted too - can be interpreted as a declaration of an open season on human rights defenders".

No due process. No necessary "proof" needed. Just killing people suspected of being drug dealers OR users. And now he's said that he might go after human rights workers.

At what point does "that" decide that this would be a good old time in America?

This honestly makes me consider, and I NEVER thought I'd say this, getting a CCW permit.

They haven't even gotten into office yet and they're making noises like this. And their potential cabinet picks like that Sheriff Clarke have this strong Neo-Fascist streak in them. Equating BLM with ISIS, saying that protests need to be "quelled"?

That's the talk of tyranny.
