Celebrated British singer, musician, songwriter and producer Greg Lake has passed away after a long and hard fought battle with cancer.
The Dorset born vocalist, who fronted both King Crimson and Emerson, Lake and Palmer, has died at the age of 69.
Greg was one of the founding fathers of progressive rock, and amongst his many musical accomplishments he's best remembered for songs including In the Court of the Crimson King and 21st Century Schizoid Man.
His manager confirmed that he passed away on Tuesday after "a long and stubborn battle with cancer", said his manager.

(4,341 posts)If you haven't read "It Can't Happen Here" by Sinclair Lewis, written in 1935 you should, its almost like he had visions of the 2016 election, prophetic as well.

We were just jamming to Karn Evil 9 pt. 2 yesterday, and he said it was one of his favorite songs.
R.I.P. Greg Lake! You were a profound influence on so many people--reaching all around the globe.

(65,325 posts)I was a gigantic ELP fan back in the day. I still play "In The Beginning" when i want to play acoustic guitar.

(65,325 posts)I knew it's From not In. Not sure why i messed that up since i sing the darn lyrics!
I also like to play "Still, You Turn Me On" on acoustic, too.
He had a nice emotive style of singing so it makes the songs fun to sing as well.
Since i'm so partial to the later generations of King Crimson, i've never listened to his stuff in that band as much. Once the "Discipline" crew got together, i pretty much forgot about the earlier stuff.

(65,325 posts)But, the stylistic differences when Levin and Belew were part of the gang were far more up my alley.
I'd bet more people liked the early stuff, but that later stuff suited my ear.

(39,392 posts)It's really a sweet song; and Keith Emerson's closing riff is understated artistic perfection. Two great souls who gave us 60s and 70s kids so much.

(24,461 posts)I've been listening to this band for roughly 40 years of my life now. Shame I never got to see them live.
RIP, Greg and Keith. Let's make nice (no pun intended), wherever you are.

(21 posts)This year has been absolutely a fuckin disaster, as a musician I will never forget the year 2016... we have lost the backbone of rock music..... artists that were pioneers, Forget the political aspect of 2016. Politics change and politicians come and go, but the music is the constant soundtrack of our lives....... RIP Greg,,, may you find eternal rest in the court of the crimson king......

That last picture is an example of serious "Pred-head".
Prednisone is notorious for weight gain in the core of the body and around the head/face. Steroids are often part of cancer therapies.

(18,837 posts)...there was much debate over the band's "Magnum Opus"...either "Tarkus" or the "Karn Evil" suite on "Brain Salad Surgery" (or that album as a whole).
I tended to lean toward the Lake-centric pieces like "From The Beginning" or "Still...You Turn Me On" because I started as a King Crimson fan and followed his music to E.L.P.

We will need their music to survive this.

(16,377 posts)saw ELP in the old Chicago Amphitheater. Bought pot off an off duty cop I knew....great times. Ears rang for days, but it was worth it. I remember they did their version of Pictures at an Exhibition for the encore.....man....I would say I can't wait for 2017 to get here, except for um, agent orange...

(24,738 posts)one of the best shows I have ever seen, I just love progressive rock.
What got me interested was listening to the King Biscuit Flour Hour on the FM dial, late at night and then when I was in the Midwest use to listen to Beaker Street with Clyde Clifford, it was amazing,

(8,978 posts)was arguably the best, and in no small measure due to Greg Lake's inspired singing and mastery of electric bass. He will be missed.

(16,446 posts)I was working room service at the Omni Hotel downtown Miami the morning after the show. I got a breakfast ticket that had the name "Emerson" on it. It was a suite. Took the order up to the room and there were ELP sitting around with their Ladies, smoking a joint. Hey asked me if I'd like to join them. I did. About 3/4 the way down the J, Mr. Lake snubbed it out and game me the roach. The joint was rolled in gold-sparkled papers. Cool. That roach is still in my memento box all there years later. They were so nice to me and gave me a 40% tip.
