Did you ever think as an American that you would long for the Bush years?...

As bad as the Bush years were I'm pretty sure we are going to be longing for them again in the coming months and years. Even if that government saddled the country with trillions of dollars of debt in needless wars that killed hundred of thousands, the basic fabric of the country still held up. I don't see that being the case under Trump. He's set to truly tear up The New Deal. Gut the EPA, ACA, Medicair, Pensions and probably everything else he can get his hands on. Basically if there is a government appointment he can make he has so far picked someone who we know is hostile to that branch of government in some fundamental way. Looks like the US is headed back to the 1890s in terms of labour laws and protections. Perhaps civil liberties too. The billionairs are already celebrating no doubt.

Everyone around Trump saw how much Bush got away with, and they are hoping to do the same and then some.

Shrub wasn't some happier time. Shrub was the precursor for things to come. Shrub was the warning shot that was ignored. A nation doesn't get to pretend torture is a matter of policy difference or that it is up for debate - and then hope to move forward unscathed. Unchanged. And I dare say it, we were weakened as a nation - both in terms of who we are as a people and how much abuse and oppression we will rationalize. As a nation and a people, we were ripe for what is taking place now.

It's never the best of times when a nation tortures people. It's not even the better of times. Because of Shrub, Trump.

Nothing over the last 8 years mitigated that Shrub Inc got away with their crimes - and that is the bottom-line for people like Trump.

What they can get away with - and so far, that's been a lot - and he's not even in office yet.

The authoritarians didn't suddenly change their minds or their hearts because Obama became President. They waited, though never really going away, and now they are happier than they have been in decades.

The Resident knew he was dumb. This one thinks he is a genius when he really is, at best, average. In the Resident's case, that translated into massive delegation to others, some sort of regression to the mean and a deteriorating trend for the country. In the present case, that translates into potential catastrophes at any time and about anything. A poor pilot in the former case, a tiny, barely hinged rudder in the latter. I know what plane I'd rather fly.
