President-elect Donald Trump escalated a fight with the U.S. intelligence community on Sunday by denouncing its findings of Russian meddling in the U.S. election, setting up an extraordinary rupture between a soon-to-be president and his national-security establishment.

Mr. Trump, in a televised interview, denied the likelihood that Russia directed cyberattacks related to the U.S. election, despite contrary findings by the nation’s intelligence officials and rising concern among lawmakers, who want the allegations investigated.

“I think it’s ridiculous,” Mr. Trump said, in a Fox News interview, of the Central Intelligence Agency’s recent assessment that Russia ordered the hacks to boost the Republican’s chances of winning the White House. Earlier, his transition team said the CIA had botched its analysis of Iraq’s program of weapons of mass destruction in 2003, implying the agency couldn’t be trusted now.

Intelligence officials pushed back Sunday for the first time against Mr. Trump’s criticism, a rare rebuttal against an American elected official.

“It’s concerning that intelligence on Russian actions related to the U.S. election is being dismissed out of hand as false or politically partisan,” a U.S. intelligence official said in a written statement. “The inclination to ignore such intelligence and impugn the integrity of U.S. intelligence officials is contrary to all that is sacred to national-security professionals who work day and night to protect this country.”

U.S. intelligence agencies have rarely been at odds with the commander-in-chief, or an incoming president, over their assessment of a key American adversary. While the assessments during the George W. Bush administration of Iraqi weapons proved wrong, they weren’t the subject of such a public back and forth.

Have been clearing my web history when I hit the paywall, but they have been scooping everyone else with real news, and that alone is worth my $.

Already get the Times due to my Sunday hard copy sub. The Times has been posting right after WaPo, but am furious that they apparently sat on the important parts of this story until WaPo published.
