(16,423 posts)1. Turkey did nothing to stop the ISIS-recruiters operating in Turkey and shipping recruits into Syria and Iraq. It was turkish students who tried to stand up to them and ISIS simply told them "stop that or you get a bloodbath". And the turkish police did nothing. The turkish government knew that the impoverished areas are a breeding-ground for islamic extremists. And they did nothing.
2. Erdogan let ISIS run amok in the region because he saw them as a tool to get rid of Assad without much effort.
3. I have never understood how Turkey never managed to stop ISIS from smuggling truck-loads of crude oil into Turkey. How about asking for documentation???
4. Turkish humanitarian volunteers were killed by ISIS in a bomb-attack in a syrian town just across the border. (IIRC Suruc) And Turkey did NOTHING. No investigations, no arrests. Nothing.
The one occasion that caused Turkey to start caring about ISIS was their bomb-attack in Istanbul in fall 2015, right before the redo of the national elections (they had to be redone because Erdogan wanted an overwhelming win instead of a narrow win), just in time for Erdogan so he can play strongman.
And what is Turkey doing, now that it has FINALLY joined the "war against ISIS"? They are fighting the guys fighting ISIS.
