Am I nuts?

Every day that goes by, I cannot believe how fast we are approaching a regime of fascism in this country.
It scares the crap out of me and makes me want to be somewhere else.

Last spring I joked with my husband that if Trump won, he'd better be prepared to get on a plane and go take
a look at moving to Kauai. I figure at our ages--65 for me and 74 for him--we're too old to take on trying to
move to another country. At least Kauai would be out in the middle of the Pacific Ocean in a state where
EVERY county voted blue this year. Hawaii was only one of two states in the country where every county
voted blue: the other was Massachusetts. No contest for me: I'm not shoveling snow!

But, of course, my husband would never be happy living on a remote island.

Now, however, I just heard from our French "daughter" (an exchange student who lived with us for
a year from 1989-90 in St. Joseph, MO) that she still owns her family's house in Bordeaux which they use for vacations and try to rent out for some extra income. We have stayed in touch over the years: she has visited here and we've visited her in France--most recently
2014 when we had Sunday lunch in the garden of her home just outside Paris.

So I just wrote her back. How would she like to have permanent tenants for her house in Bordeaux? Or care-takers?
I told her I was serious. We'd only have to hope France doesn't vote in Marine le Pen.

We have a trip planned to France in April. We will be in Bordeaux. And we will be taking her and her family to dinner in Paris before we fly home.

Neither one of my sons is interested in children. Both are gay. We have encouraged the oldest--and his partner--to think about getting out of the US, or at least out of the south.

How the Democrats will cave like they always do, no Republicans will have the courage to say "enough", and that so many of the masses will go along with the craziness.

We have friends from our Los Angeles days who have a daughter--and grandkids--in London. The daughter was not happy
with the Brexit vote--both she and her husband (a Brit) work in the financial world--and are very concerned they may have to move
from London.

Two nights ago we had dinner with some friends here. One of the couples has friends who have just permanently established
themselves in an apartment on Lake Como (Italy) after many years of visiting there and told our friends there is an apartment
available in their building and they should buy it!

I told my husband this morning we could live in Bordeaux and visit friends on Lake Como and friends in London when they come to visit
their grandchildren. Doesn't sound half bad, does it?

My family hates the Brexit thing too.

One of my cousins lives in Ireland, and that's probably where I'll go.

Not quite ready to give up here yet though.

You are absolutely NOT alone. I have discussed a similar move to Denmark with my wife and friends - and the discussions are serious. At 68 & 63 we are SO embarrassed by the Orange asshole, and those that believe his glowing pile of dung, that even the snow of Massachusetts would be better than being surrounded in North Carolina by apostles of Cheeto Jesus.

Bordeaux France? Do you know the number for Bekins or Mayflower in Bordeaux? OMG Great food & wine and people with brains - be still my heart!

we've kind of been discussing Hawaii as well...Big Island or Kauai...but we live in The People's Republic of California, so will probably hold out for a bit, to see how things go...

Vive la France!

And counties in Massachusetts are essentially defunct (local government takes place at the town level), so Hawai'i has that distinction all to itself!

It seems like you're correctly reading the signs to me.

I'm still speculating about something even worse given Trump's temperament... nuclear annihilation. As bad as all previous human tragedies and atrocities have been in the past, that's a possibility that could make them seem minor in comparison.

and if someone tosses back, the east coast is probably toast. That's how frightened I am. Maybe it's a mistake to take
the guy so seriously, but he scares the crap out of me.

I figure Hawaii would be pretty safe in that scenario. I chose Kauai because of its small population and ability to at least grow its own veggies.
You could probably survive for awhile. But then, maybe who'd want to?

I am horrified regarding our country's future. The damage the groper-in-chief will do in just the next 4 years will be massive. And that's assuming he doesn't steal the next election...

here in NC when the Republicans took total control of state government in 2012. Hell, they had outdone themselves in two years.
Then they followed up with HB 2 last spring, which I think, turned out to be the last straw for the money Republicans and caused them
to vote for Cooper for Governor to oust McCrory. But Cooper still has to fight a state house controlled by Republicans.

But think of Republican control of all three branches of government on a nationwide, federal scale. It's going to be awful, Just awful.
AND, the thin-skinned, bigoted, narcissistic a$$hole will have control of nuclear weapons and the most massive military organization
in the world. Scares the crap out of me.
