General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsThis is a thousand times worse than 2000.
And 2000 was utterly depressing in its own right. I've had a pit in my stomach since election night. I don't even know what to do anymore. I've never felt so lost and worried about the future of my country.
As much as 2000 left me reeling, 2016 is that and more. Maybe it's because, in 2000, we didn't know how bad it would get ... and now we do ... and as bad as Bush was, as bad as his administration was, Trump's seems to be worse in every facet - and he's buddies with our global adversary.
This not only repulses me, the uptick in racism and bigotry as well as the literal coup by a foreign government, but it scares me.
I'm terrified.

Like SNL last night.. had a skit that Walter White of Breaking Bad was picked for head of DEA.. it was funny but that's because it was truish.
Kate McMillan was perfect as con-way.
Gawd, why isn't SNL the news and we get it every night.. not just on Saturday Night!!!!!
It makes more sense than cnn, msnbc.. and all the creeps who pretend to bring us the news.. like chucky toad and the rest!!
Head of DEA.. Walter White! Perfect in gd trump Orwellian world.
I studiously miss Conway's act on tv but I bet Kate does her vacuousness perfectly

(4,642 posts)sure, I was disappointed, a little pissed but at that time there was no ACA, no wars, no real threat to safety nets. There wasn't that feeling of pending doom like now, the feeling that you can lose everything you worked for all your life, that feeling that your future, your life is in the hands of greedy, rich, sociopathic criminal bastards.

(28,151 posts)If this lunatic gets in the WH much misery will ensue, no doubt. I have not been crying or had a pit in my stomach though. I do not look at newspapers or intake news though because it is all so sickening.
I withdraw. My current situation allows it and so I do it. Working 10 pm to 6 am doing baker duty then 7 am to 11 am for another company, making pasta--averaging 70+ hrs a week. I bank as much as I can. I will buy a house (something I have really wanted to do since my divorce 8 years ago) in a small town here in MI. It'll be my retirement home and it will occupy my time off (the one I currently consider needs much cosmetic work).
I really see no other way for myself. I will contribute to the efforts financially but other than that, no, too busy focusing on establishing *some* security in a volatile world. I cannot afford the sucking of my energy into a vortex of frustration by closely following the horrors about to befall us. I rode that roller-coaster during the Bush years and it was hard. In that time I had a different life in a different world and could spare the time and energy. Now I need to survive and finish my climb out of the "barely subsisting" existence and, I daresay, I think the timing is fortunate.
As always, good to see you DI. We will make it through somehow.

My kids are young adults now, and they keep an eye on politics, not to the extent i do, but they pay attention and try to learn. I feel so bad now for showing them this. I wish they could just be "ignorant" of things, like so many citizens are now. Maybe it would hurt less.
But, it is the world they have grown up to be in...
I never dreamed that in my life time I would see anyone worse than bu$h and his cronies! it is hard to watch, but I can't turn away!
I cry for the earth and more so with each of the orange one's cabinet picks.

(2,160 posts)Really? A literal coup? Do you understand what "literal" means? Or "coup"?
Definition of literal
1
a : according with the letter of the scriptures
b : adhering to fact or to the ordinary construction or primary meaning of a term or expression : actual <liberty in the literal sense is impossible B. N. Cardozo>
c : free from exaggeration or embellishment <the literal truth>
coups d'état or coups d'etat play -ˈtä(z), -ˌtä(z)
: a sudden decisive exercise of force in politics; especially : the violent overthrow or alteration of an existing government by a small group
Drunken Irishman
(34,857 posts)a sudden decisive exercise of force in politics; especially : the violent overthrow or alteration of an existing government by a small group .
What a silly post.
A coup isn't always violent.
dumbcat
(2,160 posts)to where the "or" is in a definition. Violent is an adjective modifying both the nouns "overthrow" or "alteration". The definition of violent is "use of force."
But, call it what you wish. I'll just read your future uses of the term "literal" with a grain of salt, and think "virtual".
Drunken Irishman
(34,857 posts)You're pulling my leg, no - or just trolling?
Stop it. Be serious for a second.
From dictionary.com:
noun, plural coups d'état [koo dey-tahz; French koo dey-ta] (Show IPA)
1.
a sudden and decisive action in politics, especially one resulting in a change of government illegally or by force.
I guess you can debate whether this was legally done, since an actual election was held. But nothing there about it being violent.
I accept your apology.
dumbcat
(2,160 posts)So you will agree it wasn't done by force, and it's debatable as to whether it was done illegally (since there was an election), then all that's left in your definition is " a sudden and decisive action in politics". By your way of thinking any sudden or decisive action in politics is a literal coup.
Most real dictionary definitions of a coup include violence or use of force.
But you may have the last word (literally)! Bye.
Drunken Irishman
(34,857 posts)I take your last point as proof you know, deep down, I'm right and just don't want to admit it. I'll also take that as your apology. Thank you.

(7,770 posts)It's fucking million billion zillion times worse. And unchecked presidential powers brought to us by Bush AND Obama. I screamed about that shit for years on here and then I finally left. Democrats have not fought back in the past and now here we are. Massive strike is what they need to be saying instead I have them calling me for money. Like we can win elections with treason by FBI and GOP. Please. We have no leadership and I will blame Obama if he hands the keys to this monster.

(11,142 posts)Yes, HRC lost, and yes, Russia's involvement is infuriating. But there is no credible doubt as to who got the most votes in any state. More people went to the polls to vote for Trump in states that add up to more than 270 votes.
In 2000, there was considerable doubt as to who won, and the Supreme Court prevented the resolution of that doubt. (Furthermore, it turns out Gore would have won if overvotes were looked at.)
