He is basically an internet troll, and he gets his news from the RW troll sites. That's probably where the "lots of people are saying" mantra comes from, since he can't officially quote the internet trolls who comment on the RW lunatic sites.

It was some random tidbit of fake news. And it only appeared on a russian news-site. And it was only online for a few hours before they removed it.

And yet, this was good enough for someone to pass this info on to Trump who then lauded it as fact during a campaign-stop.
