Except for a candidate who's such an enormous jerk that he simply refuses and nobody cares. There is no way to make it an absolute requirement.

but it's not the law.
Of course it looks awfully suspicious for the POTUS candidate who doesn't conform, but Drumpf was elected in spite of it. Sad, but true.
