President-elect Donald Trumps selection for secretary of labor, while a successful executive, has a complicated history with women.
Andy Puzder, 66, is the CEO of Tennessee-based CKE Restaurants, which is the parent company of fast-food chains Hardees and Carls Jr. The company reported$4.3 billion in sales in its most recent fiscal year and employs 75,000 people nationwide.
Here are 5 additional things to know about the candidate to head of the U.S. Department of Labor.
1. Like Trump, hes no stranger to controversy. Carls Jr. and Hardees are arguably most known for provocative ad campaigns usually featuring scantily clad female celebrities, Paris Hilton and Kim Kardashian among them. In response to accusations of sexism, Puzder replied in 2011 that we believe in putting hot models in our commercials, because ugly ones dont sell burgers.
2. His ex-wife accused him of domestic abuse. Police were twice called to Puzders home in the late 1980s in response to reports of domestic violence. Although Puzder called the claims baseless, his ex-wife Lisa Henning said in her divorce filing that Puzder hit her, threw her to the floor and cut off the phone line when she tried to call the police. Henning recently withdrew those allegations.
3. Hes opposed to minimum wage increases. Puzder has said minimum wage hikes would hurt small businesses and lead to job losses. Hes also an outspoken critic of paid sick leave and worker protections put forth by the Obama administration, including the expanded overtime eligibility rule.
