Eric Cantor and the 2018 Senate race

Virginia Republicans who gathered at their annual meeting in Richmond over the weekend were intended to be over-awed at the inevitability of Ed Gillespie’s bid for the party’s gubernatorial nomination.

Impressive as the S.S. Gillespie may have been, the more interesting news – or, more accurate, rumor – is that former House majority leader Eric Cantor may be assembling a team to make a run at the party’s 2018 Senate nomination.

As tantalizing to some as this prospect may be, it makes no political sense.

Cantor, if we recall, was soundly defeated in the 2014 Republican primary by Dave Brat, a little known economics professor from Randolph Macon University.
